I think it will use "meaningful" modifiers -- MFSL also works, I think, certainly if you include the catalog number -- but will trip on ad-hoc ones you apply yourself, like [24/96] or [HI-RES].

Dinny, what you want to do is an "Archive And Install". This will clean replace all the system underpinnings, while preserving your Users folder (with all your apps and docs etc.). Have a look here for details.

I have had no problems at all with Max in the last few months. It used to choke on 24/96 FLAC -> 24/96 ALAC but no longer does so in the current version.
