As a former colleague aptly put it yesterday, "Having a job right now feels like getting a raise."

Today's iPad fun-fact: if you're using it for audio playback you'll get ~140hrs of continuous use. Or as Ray would say, you can listen for 8hrs a day for 17.5 days.

Depends entirely on the vehicle, Dan. Lots of cars/trucks/SUV's have undersized braking systems that run inappropriately hot and trend towards premature warping.

I got to lay eyes, but not hands on the Pad during lunch. I was in the neighborhood of my local badbuy and decided to limp in. All 4 display models were being appropriately fondled by nerds so I watched for 10 seconds or so before getting a dirty. It's a compelling looking device and I'd love to get some hands-on time. No rush though, but maybe prior to CanJam...

The more I think about this the more I get why they did what they did. I suspect it's mostly an aspect ratio thing in terms of usability and aesthetics, i.e. a 16:9 device would look fricken goofy. Also movies are still plenty big in letter box mode and there's no standard widescreen ratio even in Hollywood so you're always going to get some degree of letterboxing. I think we're going to see a very iPhone like progression with the Pad. Get the first get out, show people what it does and how it does it and do it in a rock solid stupidly amazing battery life way. Slowly roll in features in future generations to give early adopters a reason to upgrade. Is it a somewhat dickish move? Yes, but hardly without precedent. This is the reason I'll likely wait till there's plenty of stock, let used prices come down to sane levels and probably pick up a used one in 4 to 6 months just like I did with the Touch and then the Phone. I am also very curious to see what the rumored Google/Android tablet looks like. One "insider" I was listening to this morning had some very interesting things to say as well as apt comparisons to what we're currently seeing in the Phone market.

Me too. I must be a really kind customer. Unfortunately every time I looked into these cases I could swallow the shipping BS or the idea that something relatively delicate was going to have to be shipped that far with no local resource to deal with if I had a problem. I wish the US importer would bring in some of the larger cases but I guess if they saw $$ in it they'd already be doing it.

^^ this. And I wonder if there will be immediate trickle down to the Pad?

This may go a long way towards explaining HPA's approach to things.

My quote from last year for 10k 4ch RF15s was $390.27 each with a min purchase of 10. Lead time for stock values was 6 weeks. More importantly I misspoke, P&G will go up to 20k, but allegedly refused to go higher.

^^ Nice, congrats.

Gangstagrass - Ganstagrass This is where the theme song to Justified comes from, so far it's both hilarious and quite well done.

I've been seriously thinking about picking up the Airport Extreme Base Station since my Macbook supports wireless N which is supposed to have much better range and speed compared with G based networks. The iPad also supports wireless 'N' and should get that same better range the base station. If you go through the Education store you can get $10 off. Not a cheap solution but most around here have claimed that Apple makes excellent routers.

The only thing that I'd question is whether or not the man'f has recommended clearances to provide adequate airflow.

It'd certainly make working on them a hell of a lot easier. Could you imagine trying to service the Ayre? It looks damn near impossible to remove the "modules" not to mention just getting visual access to see if a part went poof.
-
They won't do any higher than 15k, I spoke with the US distributor about this last year when researching stuff for the T2 project. [edit]And I can't help but feeling that the Ayre is a colossal waste of raw materials. I understand doing a one-off like Kevin's T2 out of a single block but for a commercial products where you end up removing 75% of the material... seems like pissing money down the drain with no benefit.

Happy Birthday, Mike!

Really? I'll check with my source but I swear they were under $500 last I checked (2ch going for $250) especially if bought in quantity. I'm not "in" for this project but I'll help source parts if I can.

His hope/plan was to be able to use the wifi model and tether it to his phone for mobile/3G access. I have to say, it's a great plan and it's damn impressive if he already got it to work.

I think Mike is saying he got it to tether to his iPhone.
