I know I'm probably in the minority but I'll offer a dissenting opinion. I got rid of my iPad back in November and haven't missed it. I prefer a laptop for surfing, email, etc. so I picked up a cheap 13" Air and it cover 95% of what I want it to. The only time I want a tablet is when I'm on a plane. I tried a surface pro and it's a fine device but for more of my use cases I am much more comfortable with a traditional laptop with a hinge that can support the screen without flopping around.

Grahame, Odds are good something from the yamaha lineup could cut it. And yes, the Harmony remotes are essential these days. I use a 650 and it's far from perfect but does pretty well. The pain is the PS3 and the lack of direct compatibility. Still, the kids have everything figured out even if the grandparent's don't quite. The new setup will hopefully be as user-friendly if not a bit more so but that'll be a work in progress until all of the components selected. So far the only actual selection has been the speakers, long way to go.

I'm also curious to hear if there are any good receiver recommendations. Some time this year I'll hopefully be picking one up. Minimum requirements are 4k video and 7.1, multi-room audio. Current leading candidate is the Marantz 6011 that Shelly also mentioned but it wouldn't hurt my feelings to spend less than $1400 on just the receiver for the new HT.

Just finished watching it and it was great. The Amazon boys better step it up.

Depending on just how complicated a project you want to make this you could take a look at something like the AMB σ11.

I'm confused as to why you think you need a DC to DC convertor? Why wouldn't you just build a small regulated DC power supply that runs off an AC wall wart and have it's output match the voltage that was previously supplied by the batteries?

The first two episodes have been good. Not great, but good. I think it's got some potential and the casting choices/decisions are far better this year than last. I wish they had a stronger third but maybe he'll grow into the roll through this season.

Update - power just came back on.

Power went out about ninety minutes ago. Generator is up and running but doesn't power the oven... So we persevered and finished cooking the lasagna on the grill.

It's been snowing sideways for a while now. It's blowing hard enough that there's a pretty consistent howl. Just had our first power flicker so I'm crossing fingers and toes that it wasn't a sign of what's to come.

We've got probably 6" so far although it'll be impossible to tell moving forward now that the wind has picked up. The commute home around 1pm was entertaining with ~500' visibility at the best of times and near zero for quite a bit.

They're calling for 18-24" here although that will be seriously tough to judge given the wind that is supposed to come along with. 20-30mph with gusts over 50. Yikes. Could be a rugged 24hrs but I'll be gassing the generator tomorrow morning and planning to have enough in reserve to make it through the worst of it. It a kick in the pants though as we'd just lost all of the snow cover on the yard and things were starting to thaw some.
