November 7, 200817 yr OK, so every year about this time, i decide to do something silly and over the top. Last year was the titanium hammer. I need ideas for this year. Has to involve computer controlled machine tools. Has to involve expensive raw materials... Obviously it has to be practically useless.
November 7, 200817 yr Weren't you going to make a uranium volume knob? That'd be pretty insane, but not terribly useful.

It must have taken forever.
November 7, 200817 yr Author Weren't you going to make a uranium volume knob? That'd be pretty insane, but not terribly useful. One of the people in the machine shop was not amused at last years thing. So no hazardous materials. Nothing radioactive, no beryllium copper, no asbestos... No loud screeching noises attempting to machine damascus... And yes the hammer did take quite a while to machine. justin came up with the idea of a magnetic levitation table for the BHSE...
November 7, 200817 yr A "naked" clock, where you can see all the little bits at work. Though it probably involves a ridiculous amount of work for one that looks cool. That's just my inner horologist dreaming
November 7, 200817 yr Im all thumbs, but I made a Plexiglas eyeball clock with bloodshot capillaries for minute hands, back in high school shop. It was Halloween. That was pretty stupid
November 7, 200817 yr Author 6 of these would be way more than enough i think http://www.unitednuclear.com/magnetfull1.jpg one little mounting mistake and broken fingers for sure. 12500 gauss...
November 7, 200817 yr bungie based suspension is just as good though not as cool and I'd have to wonder if those fields aren't big enough to deflect the paths of your electrons in the tubes.
November 7, 200817 yr "A small child recently lost his hand when his father left two # 31 supermagnets unattended. The child picked one up and when he approached the other magnet on a nearby table, it became airborne and obliterated his small hand."

November 7, 200817 yr Headphone stand in the shape of a Christmas Tree for multiple phones. Made out of some very cool/exotic material.
November 7, 200817 yr maybe a pair of 2-liter size bottle-neck power triods, with all silver internal parts (solid silver wires and parts machined out of 9999 solid silver blocks). Then cryo them for two month and design a circuit (use 300B's are driver tubes, for example).

November 7, 200817 yr Author This bowling ball thing got into my head last night. So i could machine it out of a solid piece of titanium, but i did titanium last year. A solid piece of african ebony might be really nice. The titanium is most likely out of the price range for a joke, and the chunk of ebony might be unobtainable at any price. I figure i need 1 cubic foot. maybe some kind of glowing orb... edit: bowling ball made out of titanium would be about 200 lbs and my price is $78 per lb can't be...
