Ok so a while back I posted about Built to Spill coming and then I forgot about it. WTF. Not missing Joanna Newsom, just bought my ticket online. Then I realized that Iron & Wine is coming the same week to the same venue. Tallahassee does not suck.

I scan jambase a lot for shows within 300 miles of Mobile, and Tallahassee pops up a lot with cool shows.

At SF Symphony Hall for the world premiere of Rufus Wainwright's Five Shakespeare Sonnets, with Rufus providing vocals as well. Also Kurt Weill's symphony no. 2 and Milhaud's laceration du monde. Should be fun.

Just saw this. So, how was it for you? I enjoyed it overall but the vocals were just too loud at times. He has a cool voice that suited the sonnets.

Yeah, his decorative phrasing worked well with Billy. Overall great. No problems with vocal volume so either they learned from previous night, there are advantages of being way out of the halls sweet spot (wrapped side tier one), or you're too old. Haven't cared much for Rufus since Poses, but been following. Great to get back to interested.

seeing pink martini tonight! yay!!!

I couple months ago I attended one of the shows in Mark Knopfler's Get Lucky tour. Haven't had much of a chance to see anything else, since I somehow managed to miss Bob Dylan at my college campus.

Aimee Mann at the Tarrytown Music Hall on Thursday night.

A bit disappointing, comparing to half-a-dozen previous performances I've seen her over the past ten years. She went "budget", using only two other performers - a bass player/vocalist, and a pianist - rather than her full band. I don't mind stripped-down performances, but this night it didn't work so well. Frankly, I missed her rock-out self. She seemed a bit unrehearsed, and they seemed to be experimenting with computer-aided accompanyment controlled by the keyboardist. It probably didn't help that the venue sounded a bit harsh. I don't know shit about using a soundboard, so I'm not sure what could have been helped.

The combined result was heavy-handed bassline, and a sluggish computer drumming. Aimee herself didn't hit her own stride until much toward the end of the concert. She finally redeemed herself with an encore rendition of "Red Vines" stripped more bare & emotional than I'd ever heard it, as well as "It's Not" for a final cut.

Hopefully Cyndi Lauper will be better in a few weeks in the same venue *fingerscrossed*

That makes me feel a slight bit better for missing her

I WILL make it to one of her concerts soon!

Pink Martini puts on a good show. I saw them at the Tiffany in Portland on New Year's Eve in 2002. Great fun and I've been a fan since.

More recently, I saw Mini-KISS at the Paradise Casino in Yuma on October 30. They didn't quite have it together for a few songs, but they rocked on quite a few. They were also really cool with the audience. They allowed people right up front for photos and had lots of interaction. They came out after the show to sign autographs and take photos. Cool guys - I'd see them again.

We were in the sixth row and I am too old but I heard two younger guys complaining about the vocal volume as we left so it was purely my crotchety old nature. Funny story about Rufus is that my niece was dating a guy who was ostensibly straight but met Rufus after a show in Minneapolis and ended up sleeping with him. Not sure which team her bf settled on because she dumped him after that, and she hates Rufus music to this day.

We just got back from seeing the Vijay Iyer Trio and it was awesome. They have a great sound and chemistry. They did mostly Iyer music but also did Stevie Wonder's Big Brother and Michael Jackson's Human Nature, which were both great but the latter was terrific. A PhD in math from Cal and an incredible musician as well. Too bad this kid doesn't have anything going for him.

John McLaughlin at Town Hall NYC Saturday night. Holy Cow what an awesome show he had Gary Husband on keyboards, Mark Mondesir on drums and Etienne M'Bappe on bass. What a stellar band look out for Mark and Etienne as they were phenomenal instrumentalists. I've always loved this guys work and it was a treat to see him from the 4th row. I can't believe he is approaching 70 as he is in great playing form. If you get a chance to see him on this tour do it.

He said next year he and Carlos Santana may be doing a tour.

I'd definitely go for some McLaughlin and Santana. Just listened last week to Love Supreme and Love Devotion Surrender back to back.

Just got back from the Joanna Newsom show. Such a charming performer, my love is solidified. She played everything I wanted to hear, and with a malleable 5 piece band behind her to interpret the orchestral stuff. The venue here is quite nice as well. Crystal clear sound and the crowd tonight was very respectful.

Just came back from Bob Dylan.

It was like listening to some drunken old man with a throat infection shout at you for two hours. I could only make out 10% of what he said.

Saw Epica tonight, did the whole meet and greet thing too. Was great. Opening for them were Scar Symmetry, Blackguard, and The Agonist. Good night, great setlist, I had fun.

She does, and they sound amazing. Definitely my favorite album, and 3 of my top 4 favorite CDs ever (Consign to Oblivion, The Divine Conspiracy, and Design Your Universe).
