Get your music while it is 'fresh'.  Classical has had a lot of releases already this year.

Example:

Maybe a touch challenging for a Monday morning. But captivating regardless. I don't think I have had a Janáček recording before. Patricia and Fazil play well together.

I thought I was done for the night, but I just kept on listening. I guess these ETYs out of the laptop are easy to listen to.

And so is:

Herbert at 95 still doing his thing. This is not a grand, bombastic telling of the Brahms. It is a lovely more delicate interpretation. He pulled on different themes that I don't think I recognized in the past. Not that I am super familiar with the 3rd and 4th, but I really appreciated these recordings.

Wasn't sure whether to listen to Blow by Blow/Wired/There & Back, or Who Else!/You Had it Coming/Jeff, but stuck with starting the original trifecta.  Will listen to the rest of the original trifecta and the secondary trifecta over the course of the next couple of days.

I was watching a documentary on SRV and he talked about Albert as being a huge influence. And I had to think about what King albums I had listened to. Not many, so I went back to some early stuff. I like.

I would highly recommend this:

Albert approaches the blues with love, Hooker approaches the blues with anger. Both get there.

Well this was in my queue for a while. Gives an idea of the depth of the queue.

Thanks for this Ric. I am not sure I would have added this to my queue on my own, not knowing the work or the composer.  But it was a good listen. I got into the themes and the blend of voice, instruments and other.

Yasuhiro Kohno Trio + One - Song of Island

512x512bb.jpg&w=1920&q=75

A private press rarity that few know of, ‘Song of Island was the third album from pianist Yasuhiro Kohno’s trio, recorded live at the jazz club and live house (gig venue) ‘Again’ in August 1985. Pressed up in small numbers, ‘Song for Island’ was issued on the private ASCAP Records, set up by pianist and band leader Yasuhiro Kohno.

The album is a follow up to Kohno-san’s previous two albums, ‘Peace’ and ‘Roma in the Rain’, released on the cult Aketa’s Disk label. However, unlike the ‘Peace’ and ‘Roma in the Rain’ albums, ‘Song of Island’ has never been reissued before – until now.The title track was included on J Jazz volume 3. This is a very special album that captures a special time in Japanese jazz, when exemplary acoustic jazz was still being performed and recorded by dedicated and talented artists at the height of mid-80s synth pop. ‘Song of Island’ features four original compositions by Yasuhiro Kohno plus a distinctive take on a jazz standard.

PERSONNEL:

  • Yasuhiro Kohno - (piano)
  • Masahiro Kanno - (vibes)
  • Tsutomu Numakami - (bass)
  • Hironobu Fujisawa - (drums)

Recorded live on August 28th and 29th 1985 at "Live House Again"

I have been a big fan of Rachel Price for years. I use to see her on Live from Here and Lake Street Drive. I was very happy to see this in the new years. Her voice is a treat to my ears.

Sent me down a little youtube journey into past. So here is another treat I found {with some unknown back-up band she must have met somewhere}:

Glass Island by Wax Fang and Lacey Guthrie

Her voice reminds me of someone...Everything But The Girl girl (Tracey Thorn), maybe?  Music is nicely low-key.  Comfy music.  I need more like this.

Also, lots of Frederic Chiu -- need instrumental music to listen to, while simultaneously taking online lessons.

I'm thinking maybe I should switch careers to something less stressful, like perhaps gravedigging.

There are a lot worse ways to spend an hour than listening to angelic voices pass phrasing and harmony back and forth. I don't know Byrd that much, but I can appreciate this 400yo music.

I never heard of Byrd before this post.  After listening, I pre-ordered a cd this music.
