Headcases Outside? The Horror... The Horror...

  1. Started by The Monkey,

Considering this amp. Has anyone heard the DAC version? If so, how is it?

  2. I have the headphones choices down to these... Velodyne vPulse Beyerdynamic MMX 102 ie Sennheiser MM70s Which is better? I love some bass but not at the expense of everything else. Or is there another choice for the price? (below $100)? Thanks

At the NYC meet, I was talking to Aaron and he mentioned the D10 and how much he likes it with the iriver/esw10 and I was wondering if anyone heard it or have any comments about the circuit. It seems like the only portable amp/dac that is battery powered and takes spdif that I know of.

  4. Started by Gonz,

Maybe you guys could offer some input... For his requirements, this is what I know so far: He cares about audio and build quality. He wants PDF reading capability. And photo capability. I'm probably going to suggest a media player, hard drive based, rechargeable... and a separate mp3 player, flash based, 4-8Gb, with AA or AAA batteries, as being more compact/rugged, and in case he's away from electricity for awhile. I will talk to the guy about portable amps. But ability to sound good without one is important. I could definitely use some suggestions for headphones too. So if you were going to Iraq, what would you want to take with ya? Thank you fo…

  5. I just started using Tidal. Is it worth getting Bluetooth streamer like the Walkman versus using the iPhone six? Also, is the Walkman the only budget portable device that can stream Tidal? Thank you very much.

  7. Started by Dusty Chalk,

I'll post this in portable audio, since I'm going to talk about my car. My head unit is borken -- it won't play CD's. I suspect it's just an alignment problem, but since it's a proprietary system built by Clarion for Suzuki, I'm thinking I'll probably have to replace it. So I'm having a hard time finding what the dimensions of the unit are without taking it apart. Clarion incorrectly labels it as a Euro-DIN unit, which it's not. Euro-DIN is close to single DIN, but mine is closer to a double-DIN. External dimensions of the faceplate are 3 3/4" x 6 3/4", which is smaller than my understanding of a double-DIN to be (3 7/8" x 6 7/8"). (Car is a 2004 Suzuki Aerio SX.) I…

So I made a comment about how the portable DVD player my mom got for Christmas was neat. So now they're getting me one for my b-day. I don't know too much about them other than the fact that non of them seem to have decent screens. So any advice on which I should get. Mom's got a Sony and it seems nice, but are there any models that stand out among the rest?

  9. Started by Tony,

I keep seeing more and more trusted people on headfi saying the Vcap iMod is as enjoyable as Pico dac (albeit they are different in sound signature and qualities). In the past I used to believe iMod was overrated, but now I'm basically convinced I want a Vcap iMod and I'm preparing some big money to get it. This thread (and your replies) will be the last trial before I commit. Hope you can helpz.

I've mostly been using the E-MU0404usb with its built in headphone amp which definitely bottle-necks the built in DAC. But combined with my M^3 the DAC in this soundcard is surprisingly decent. A bit edgy/gritty in the highs and not the biggest/deepest soundstage (compared to the North Star) but otherwise not bad at all for how little it costs. I wonder if it could be improved with a better output (tubed?) stage?

  12. Started by deepak,

I just started using the ipod photo, and I installed the latest iTunes. It was formatted for Mac, so iTunes proceeded to restore it to work with a PC. It downloaded the latest software update and then it asked me to plug in the power cable for the ipod dock. It was plugged in, and an image of a power adapter going into an outlet appears on the ipod screen. Now I'm not able to get beyond that screen. And the ipod isn't showing up in iTunes anymore. I tried switching USB ports, restarting iTunes, and restarting my computer and it won't go beyond that screen. I also tried the hard reset method described on Apple's website (switch on hold then press menu and the center…

I enjoy my iPhone 6s+/Oppo HA-2 combo, but now I'm looking for an all-in-one solution. My Freq-Phased JH-16s are what I use on the road, and I've been looking around at various DAPs to find one to pair with the JH-16s. I don't want to get too spendy, and I've arrived at something around the price of the the AK100ii as the sweet spot. Does anyone have experience with this combo, or could recommend something decent around the same price range ($800)? I can't believe I'm contemplating spending even that much just to have a somewhat slimmed down solution, but This Is Head Case and all that. Any advices?

Just looking for some impressions, particularly with E500's. I'm currently making do with a Go-Vibe 5 but I'm looking to upgrade on that. So far the contenders are the Xenos 1HA-EPC, the AE-2 and the new Millett Hybrid portable. Sound quality of course is important but budget, or lack thereof, will probably end up being a big determining factor.

I am looking for recommendations for a closed can. Requirements are isolates well, comfortable enough, light, can take a beating, sounds decent, under 200 pref under 100 bucks. My main phones are 580's and ksc-35's if that helps. Thanks for your help.

Spoke with my CIO about using my productivity budget on a pair of custom IEMs and it seems like it's going to get approved. What's the current consensus on which one is preferred here? I like the ER-4 sound sig. I greatly preferred my im716's over my Triple-Fi 10's. But they broke so I'm stuck using the TF10's. As for budget, as long as it's under $1,500.

So after 5 continuous years of use with a 1/8" to tape adapter, the tape transport in my Subaru's stereo has bit the dust. I could look into getting the transport repaired or replaced, but it's probably simpler to get a Pu-36 Explosive Space Modulator FM transmitter for the 'Pod. I have a Belkin adapter that plugs in to my car's "power port" (cigarette lighter) and has an iPod dock connector. It powers the 'Pod and has a 1/8" jack. My car only has one power port, so I imagine I'll have to discontinue using the Belkin. I need an FM transmitter that has good signal strength and sound quality and can power the iPod. I live in a relatively rural area, so I shouldn…

I bit on the V-Moda FOTM awhile back for my 2 sons without doing much if any research. One of them partially severed the cable right below the y-split (or possibly courtesy of the relatively new kitten). V-Moda is saying they don't do repairs. I suppose I could recable it with 18 ga. Jena Any recommendations for some decent buds/IEMs, <$100 (<$60 preferable). They both already have KSC-75s as well. These are for use out of an i-pod, and even though they have them, they don't like dealing with amps. I seem to recall some good thoughts on the Altec 716s? Yuin? I know Klipsch had their pre Christmas 50% off thing as well. Thanks for any suggestions.

  19. I've just gotten a new MacBook Pro and I knew Creative didn't support the Mac platform. I still use my PC to work the ZVM but figured there might be a way to make it work. Unfortunately, Google has turned up nothing. Anyone here got suggestions? Yeah....buy an ipod comes to mind.

AMP3 DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: The AMP3 is the first product to be introduced to the audio marketplace by Hisoundaudio, a China-based company that, by their own description, is dedicated to producing audiophile-grade players that incorporate the oriental concept of music and art being inseparable. The AMP3 is designed to address the audio shortcomings of the current portable audio marketplace. Its design goals are to produce a player that incorporates the following characteristics: sound resolution, separation of the sound stage, a sense of power, and the flow of the music. Hisoundaudio flatly states that it is their design goal to produce audiophile-grade players…

Techmoan does it best (he didn't mention that the high-end PCDPs had line-out and mini-Toslink optical outputs for outboard DACs, but it's not an audiophile channel):

I've pretty much decided to get a Sansa Clip sometime soon for gym duty, but I need help picking out some phones. I would prefer something cheap, so I won't feel bad if they get smashed by dumbbells or something. I currently use either my PX100s or my KSC75s, but the ambient noise is so great that I have to turn them way up, which probably is destroying my ears. My gf has some marshmallows, but I hate their sound. I'm currently leaning toward the Head-Direct RE2s. Anything else that's good and (preferably) well under $100?

  25. We'll my iPhone 6plus is getting laggy and the 7 is a non-starter for me (no headphone jack). I am giving up hope that Apple will go back to a 3,5 mil hp jack so enter the LG V20. I am trying to strip down my smart phone and basically use the phone - dap- camera-maps-email function but get away from instagram/facebook blah blah blah. So anyone here use the LG, I know Peter was a pretty big supporter. I would likely use Neutron as a player and load a large micro sd. I tried to read the HF thread but at 170+ pages with 90/10 noise to signal I gave up.
