Music

From Kumbaya to Hammer Smashed Face.

  1. As of late (and by late I mean the past year in its entirety), I have been radically drifting away from the current rock hits to the older stuff, the classic rock, as well as a lot of old Spanish music (Julio Iglesias in his younger days, for example). Though I still enjoy an occasional listen of the current stuff, I find the older stuff (made around the 70's and 80's) much more intriguing. Whether to attribute this to me getting older and thus requiring a more mature listening, or that the new stuff just doesn't seem as inspired/complex/imaginative/clever/etc as the old stuff, I cannot say. What I do know is that music I formerly considered "old people stuff" has s…

I happen to like music that can be broadly categorized as "shoegazing" and "noise-pop." So if anyone else is a fan of such genres, and who's also in the DC/MD/VA area, there is a local music fest full of bands who make music in those genres: MySpace.com - DNA in the DNA Radio WMUC Radio 88.1 FM - 101 - Male - COLLEGE PARK, Maryland - www.myspace.com/dnainthedna I've seen a couple of these bands live before, and while they are by no means mind-blowing, they are pretty decent, IMO.

So, anyone else getting excited about this? Admittedly I'm a fanboy to the nth degree. But Fox Confessor... remains one of my all-time favorite albums, her back catalog is incredibly strong, and that voice? There just aren't the words. More and more is starting to come out... We all complain about sibilant gear, but microphones and associated gear can put the sibilance right on the source, so tell me about some of your ...erm... favorites? I'll tell you why I'm asking later. Doesn't matter if the music is good or bad, I'm more interested in the acoustic properties of the recordings.

Digital Music Streaming Startup tunesBag Releases Desktop Application It looks interesting and I signed up for an account but haven't loaded anything on yet. Gotta wonder about the legality of this though. I suppose if you really want to have a streaming music server of your files it's safer to DIY it and stay off the radar.

The last surviving member of the LA 4, Bud Shank, has passed away at 82. Everybody has heard his music. Among other things he played the flute solo on California Dreaming for the Mamas & Papas. Godspeed Bud.

Is it worth picking up all of them in this box? Amazon.com: Mozart The Symphonies: Sir Charles Mackerras, Mozart: Music The price is certainly right. Apparently its a cheaper version of a more expensive box. Not sure what the packaging is like.

  16. I've been listening to Public Enemy A LOT lately and it made me realize that the hip-hop DJ has become something of a lost art. Most mainstream rappers are using more electronics than the traditional TT>Mixer>TT setup, and turntablism, well, that's another beast altogether. It seems to me that the simplicity of early hip-hop has for the most part been swept to the side in favour of more complex beats and melodies. This isn't a bad thing, really, but it did get me thinking about earlier prominent DJs like Terminator X, The Biz, Yella, Muggs and Lethal, who were all about the beat, setting up simple sets for the boys on the mic to shine through. I'm focusing o…

Picking up the new Propagandhi album, "Supporting Caste" this afternoon. I've been waiting for this sucker since a track leaked a couple of months ago. I'm still surprised it's already here; their trend has been 5+ years between albums since founding the G7 Welcoming Committee. Anyone else excited about the Winterpeg Punks' return? I'm going to be going crazy this afternoon, looking instead of listening. I had to pick a large image here, for detail. Some great album art once again:

  21. Just received my, bought used, and wonder which year of release are yours please. My is from year 1988 made in Germany with old fashion big double CD case. Looks like the first run, but I am not sure, cos most of what I see on Ebay now are year 2000. I was simply wondering if there any quality differences between 1988 and say 2000. To know this you have to hear them side by side, so, maybe someone had the chance to do so, please share then...Not that my are bad, but its just 20 years old, quite exceptional, for me anyway. THX

So, just a question for ya'll.. how many CDs do you have with pre-emphasis and what do you feel is the best way to handle playback of these CDs? In my case, they are mostly Japanese recordings. If you rip music off these discs, do you handle this in the software domain? If you're not ripping music, it seems like a lot of newer equipment doesn't handle this spec at all... In the DIY realm, what do you think of handling this in a passive fashion, much like an RIAA circuit, pros/cons?

For some inexplicable reason, ~70% of my listening these days is Grateful Dead (or JGB). As background, I hated the Dead back in high school (went to a US private school, and found these WASPy deadheads quite annoying). At college, less annoying but couldn't care less about the roommates who were into the Dead. I've been to one and only Dead concert - Madison Square Garden in the '90s - more freaked out by the freaks than enjoying the show. Fast forward to today, I keep reaching for my GD CDs (or equivalent FLAC/ALAC). I've belatedly come to appreciate GD. I just spent $$$ ordering 9-CD Winterland '73 set, Terrapin Station 3-CD limited edition, Cow Palace, Dozin' At…

In the tradition of the following threads... '07 Mid-Year Report Card '07 Year-End Report Card '08 Mid-Year Report Card ... it seemed time, or even past time, to revisit this tradition. Each year I find an album or two worth checking out thanks to the impressions in these threads by those here at the -Case. Unfortunately my preliminary list has 30 titles released in '08, and countless others that are a year or two old but are new to me. So I'm going to need to make some time to sit down and go through them, slap a grade on each and follow up with the appropriate comments. Despite tales of the downfall of good music, I found this year to be better than decent (even…
