I've been listening to Public Enemy A LOT lately and it made me realize that the hip-hop DJ has become something of a lost art. Most mainstream rappers are using more electronics than the traditional TT>Mixer>TT setup, and turntablism, well, that's another beast altogether. It seems to me that the simplicity of early hip-hop has for the most part been swept to the side in favour of more complex beats and melodies. This isn't a bad thing, really, but it did get me thinking about earlier prominent DJs like Terminator X, The Biz, Yella, Muggs and Lethal, who were all about the beat, setting up simple sets for the boys on the mic to shine through. I'm focusing o…

http://www.terrascope.co.uk/Terrastock7/Terrastock7_performers.htm I don't know many of the bands, but it's the only big festival that has been held here for many centuries, so I might as well go. Anyone going to make the trek down here? I know Beeble is.

Interesting Radio 4 program, listen-able on BBC's iPlayer in the US, (for the next 2 days) here: BBC - BBC Radio 4 Programmes - The Art of Re-mastering Sara Mohr-Pietsch explores digital re-mastering: is it the art of restoring music to its original glory; or just another way of selling us music we already own? The whole of the Beatles back catalogue has recently been re-released in re-mastered form; a quick search of any record store or online shop will reveal that a large number of recordings have been re-mastered, from very old crackly recordings to very recent releases. But what do the words 'digitally re-mastered' on a cd actually mean? Sara Mohr-Pietsch …

Some of you folks know that I'm a fan of early recordings. One of the attractions for me is the combination of music, scholarship and cultural anthropology. Here's an article (the name just doesn't do it justice IMHO) from the NY Times Magazine that has spurred some amazing threads amongst collectors. A little warning, this is much longer than your average article but if you're interested in this kind of stuff, the time is well spent. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/04/13/magazine/blues.html

You don't have to be a Fall fan to enjoy this article about what happened between their previous album (Fall Heads Roll) and their new album, Reformation Post-TLC. And like the article says, its nothing to Marc E. Smith, the only constant throughout the band's 25 albums, where Smith has seen over 50 musicians pass through the band's ranks. Taken from http://www.gloriousnoise.com/reviews/2007/the_fallreformation_post_tlc.php

The Feelies are getting back together and playing their first gig together in 15 years when they open for Sonic Youth in Battery Park (which will be my new "backyard") on July 4th. http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003786678 and http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/49827-the-feelies-reunite I am very, very happy about this. Few at the other site seem to care. At least Voltron will find this interesting.

I just picked this up a week ago on vinyl and CD. I haven't given the Glow Pt 2 a careful listen in a while. It safe to say that it still holds up with any of my favorite albums. If you haven't listened to this album yet than I highly recommend that you pick it it up. If you get the re-released version then it comes with an entire disc of songs that were written from this period and compliment the album quite well edit: shit. will a mod move this to the music section and delete this edit?

So one fine evening on boxing day, still stuffed full of leftover turkey and feeling tired from 3 days straight of overeating, I am listening to some tunes. I've just gotten back from 3 days without headphone access. I'm listening to a lossless flac file and stop to take the headphones off all of a sudden... I think to myself 'wtf are my headphones/ears broken?' What has changed in these 3 days? I sit back in disbelief as I pack another bowl of some decent 'AA' BC hydroponic, contemplating how I will pursue a music career being deaf, or at least having sub-par hearing. Then, I see winamp flickering through the different mp3 bitrates (as it does with variable on…

Since we here have the coolest feature i seen on any forums being the ability to embed video in the threads directly I figure we need a Music Video thread. this thread is for any video that was done in the 80's. the 80's were the high light of music videos and 80's music is pretty wild and stretched... The first Video is From Morris Day and his "Jungle Love" video he may be best known for. Little do people know Day went to high school with Prince...who cares the song Rocks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irimNjHPS9c

http://niggytardust.com/ I haven't seen a thread about this album (here) - I managed to get a free copy before they took them down (after 100,000 downloads) and actually went back to pay $5 for the flac (eat that, radiohead). Disclosure: I was a big nine inch nails fan in the 90's. I'd heard William's "list of demands" prior to NiggyTardust!, and liked it too, though I am not generally a hip hop fan (beastie boys aside). I really like this album. It is probably one of the most interesting albums I've heard since American Edit. It is just, wow. Tremendous respect for Trent's productions skills. Some of the tracks sound very nin-like, others not at all, and it st…

Found this on YouTube via Facebook, the full concert without all of the overdubbing and post-processing that mucked up the commercial version that I've been listening to for nearly 40 years now. Whether there is a God or not, I sure hope this gets put out on vinyl soon... very soon! I could care less about the 'footage' in terms of the video, it's the audio that sounds amazing! PART ONE: PART TWO: PART THREE:

And which ones do you plan on attending in the future? Myself, I never found time to go to a lot of concerts, but I'm hoping to change that now that I've got time and money. Before I moved to Houston though, I was lucky enough to see Pearl Jam on my last night in the 'Burgh Eddie was really feeling the crowd, and went through 2 bottles of wine and played for about 2 and a half hours. September 11th I finally get to see Tool

This is what mybloodyvalentine.org looks like right now: This has been a pretty disastrous launch. MBV clearly learned nothing from NIN and Radiohead when it comes to high profile album launches. They've had 22 years to plan this album release.

Who else is looking forward to the SACD release of Surfer Rosa? I have high hopes for this one, since it's supposed to be re-mastered from the original analog tapes, and it's MoFi, so at least on paper, it looks like a winning combination.

Hooleee shit, best hip hop album of the year so far for me Definitely less eclectic than Phrenology which makes it a bit less interesting in parts, but still a very solid album. Maybe it's just because I'm really into it right now, but it's almost Things Fall Apart quality

Howard Smith was a long time writer for the Village Voice. Over the years, he interviewed and wrote articles about some of the icons of the 60's and 70's. Folks like Eric Clapton, John Lennon, and Frank Zappa were among those he interviewed. Like most journalists of the time, he would tape those interviews then go back and write his piece from those tapes. Fortunately, Smith had saved those tapes in hopes of using them for writing his memoirs and they've now been digitized and are going to be distributed on iTunes and a limited ed box set. Here's the article from the NY Times which includes some samples of those interviews. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/19/arts/mus…

Oh Lordi. "In Finland, we have no Eiffel Tower, few real famous artists, it is freezing cold and we suffer from low self-esteem," said Mr. Putaansuu, who, as Lordi, has horns protruding from his forehead and sports long black fingernails.

Though its a band I don't listen to that much, maybe because I lost all of their CDs over the years, but TMBG has consistently been one of my all time favorite bands since I was 13 years old. Back then I only had ears for bands like Metallica, GNR, Slayer, and Pantera, but somehow TMBG squirmed their way in there. They spoke to my dorky metal heart in a way no band really has since, except maybe Phish. Anyone else a fan? I never see any TMBG in the WAYLT thread so I thought I'd ask.
