I have very little John Adams around and after watching I AM LOVE with a JA soundtrack I want more. Any suggestions on where to start to explore?

Plays the Music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn Stereophile went gaga over this album. They gave it 4 1/2 stars for performance and five for sound. I checked it out on Lala and it does sound worth a serious listen. Can't speak to the five stars for sound part, since I only listened to a stream on my laptop speakers. Lala has this embed code feature with which I can allegedly post a player. (crossing fingers) [snip] Naw. Guess that doesn't work in forum posts. Here's a permalink. Maybe that will work better. I don't know how many of you saw this, but Ms. Newsom is releasing her follow up to the wonderful Ys next month with a 3-CD/3-LP release of Have One On Me. Yes, a triple album. No idea what to expect, but I'm looking forward to this immensely. Pre-Order here. With tour dates to follow: I'd be lying if I said I wasn't going to keep an eye on that March 17th date in Cambridge, MA.

Well, last year I started a thread and never did a list. Not this year. Unfortunately a change in jobs around mid-year has left me with considerably less time to explore for new music. This has left me in a bit of a rut with music, and has also left me without a lot of exposure to second-half 2009 releases. But for what it's worth, my abbreviated list is below. Neko Case - Middle Cyclone What list of mine couldn't start with Neko Case? I figured it would be my album of the year after the first listen, and many months and two live shows have done nothing to change my mind. If anything, seeing her perform has allowed me to appreciate some of the songs on the al…

  10. Started by cegras,

It was a nice experience. Overall, the music was not tear-inducing, but there were a few favourite sections of mine, including some arias by the tenor, who had a wonderful voice. The chorus was a bit piercing. I've always been sensitive to soprano ranges, so a deafening array of sopranos was bound to hurt my ears. Overall, it can get deafening, really quick. The position where you sit affects the music (expensive tickets, etc), and the performance you get may not be cherry picked, like a recording is. Often I find that live performances always somewhat fall below recordings, and probably for obvious reasons. This led me to think a bit about hi-fi and music. People a…

I searched the forum and did not find such a thread, so inspired by this thread I would like to ask head-casers this: how big is your physical music collection? By physical I mean CDs, LPs, SACDs, R2R, music DVDs and etc, basically any original media. Let's keep any CD-Rs and digital files out of this I have nothing against digital stuff and copies, it's is cool, but I would like to know what original goodies you got stored in your bookcases, boxes and basements I have about 1500 CDs, 200 LPs plus some music DVDs, and god does this stuff take up a lot of living space.

  12. At some point or another, we have all lusted after people's gear signatures. However, whose music collection would you like to have? For me, probably Deepak. I'm not sure why, but with some of the things he's sold, I wonder what he's keeping

  13. Started by dreamwhisper,

So one fine evening on boxing day, still stuffed full of leftover turkey and feeling tired from 3 days straight of overeating, I am listening to some tunes. I've just gotten back from 3 days without headphone access. I'm listening to a lossless flac file and stop to take the headphones off all of a sudden... I think to myself 'wtf are my headphones/ears broken?' What has changed in these 3 days? I sit back in disbelief as I pack another bowl of some decent 'AA' BC hydroponic, contemplating how I will pursue a music career being deaf, or at least having sub-par hearing. Then, I see winamp flickering through the different mp3 bitrates (as it does with variable on…

Vic Chesnutt in a coma - Americana and roots music - No Depression word is that it doesn't look good. a real fucking shame if he doesn't pull through. I saw him play with Widespread Panic NYE in Atlanta, 2001. I had no idea who he was and it was amazing. I have been a fan ever since.

  17. Is the mastering on the LP version as horribly compressed as it is on the CD or does it actually have a little dynamic range?

  18. Started by shaizada,

On the current 45rpm reissue of Coltrane Crescent (ORG Release), the second disc doesn't sit well with my VPI Periphery ring and I'm kinda lost on this. Basically the ring doesn't clamp the disc circumference properly. It flattens down one side, but the disc is short on the opposite end. So the disc ring just sits a little loft sided. Knowing the high quality of the ORG releases, I thought this is just a one disc fault or something. So I sent it back to elusive disc who send me a new replacement copy. SAME PROBLEM! Now I'm a little concerned. All the ORG releases in my collection are pretty much pristine...so I'm a bit bummed. Add to that about a 40 second t…

Hey guys, I was wondering about this subscription as I've never done anything like this before. How does it work exactly? They send you 2 titles a month for how many titles? For people who have this subscription, how are you liking the sound quality of the records? I know Analogue Productions does a run of 25 titles with 2 titles a month, but I'm not sure how the Music Matters subscription works out. I think MM can easily fulfill my jazz fetish Do you guys think its worth doing?

  23. Started by Dusty Chalk,

Anyone know of a good resource for determining the details of audio tracks of Blu Ray disks? I was browsing in the store, and if I hadn't picked up the Cure Trilogy Live in Berlin and looked at the back, I never would have known that there was a stereo 24/96 track on it. Wouldn't mind knowing if there are others out there. I'm sure there are some good high-res surround disks, but I'm of course mostly interested in stereo. Yes, I already know about the 2L label (DSD and such, music-only Blu-Ray disks), and of course the Nine Inch Nails Ghosts I-IV was the first Blu-Ray I ever bought. And yes, while googling, I did stumble across that Celine Dion disk. Perhaps if …
