Speakers

Should be able to pick it up by the end of next week. I'm thinking it will be a pretty big upgrade over my trusty VK-42SE. Now all thats left are the amps. Right now I'm leaning towards the BAT VK-75se or 150se tube amps or the 600SE SS BAT amp. That should complete the BAT/Harbeth system.

With postjack's acquisition of Tkam's Quad 22Ls, it certainly looks like Quad is the FOTM lol. I got my Quad 12L active monitors today, and I am very pleased with the purchase, considering that I got it at half the MSRP. I find them to be very detailed and resolving, which shouldn't be surprising given that they are designed for studio mixing, but they are definitely not harsh. If anything, they have more of a treble roll-off than either my L3000s and K1000s. The midrange is smoooth though, and very pleasing to the ear, and bass has decent impact but is a bit sloppy right now because I'm still using the cardboxes they came with as temporary stands. Will its been a year with the Harbeths. (and Manley amps) Truly one of the most enjoyable years listening to music I have had. I've probably bought more records since getting the Harbeths than any time prior. It took a couple months to really appreciate what they do, which is recreate recordings in a way few other speakers I have heard can. They (my system in general) walks the fine line of speed & resolution and warmth and musical about as good as I have heard. They play really big and transparent. That is the question. Spent a good deal of time with both this week, and to me, sonicly they are equal, and very close in sound signature. My wife likes the ANs more i dont really care either way. But the fact i can get by with 5-10 watts with the ANs is pretty cool. Down side is i would have to pull new dedicated lines and turn my room around so i can corner load them. Downside with the harbeths is i would probably move to more powerful tube amps. That means money, and heat. Price is pretty equal. I can get AN demos for $12K plus shipping for them and stands. I went to my regular hi-fi store, MacBook Pro in hand, for some speaker evaluation today. The plan was to try the Harbeth 7ES-3s originally, but things were considerably altered by my running into the fluent-English-speaking KEF dealer the last time I went there who pointed out a new pair of Q900s in the store. I'd neither experienced Harbeths nor KEFs, so was somewhat intrigued. The KEFs are cheaper, but have a funky combined tweeter and mid designed to improve the soundstage and image even when listening off-center, along with a passive cone instead of a port, the whole aim being making them very room-friendly. I have a pair of Dared 300B quasi mono blocks that output 13 watts. They have 2 12AU7's as the input and Sophia Princess Mesh as the output. I am going to be using these as nearfield listening sessions in the bedroom when the wife is clanging pans in the kitchen and my son is being chased by cops with the constant sound of a siren in his room (not a good time to listen to my living room speaker setup which I am very happy with). I will be using an Exemplar Modded Oppo BDP-5 as the source. Anyone have experience with both, besides Tyll's setups at Canjam, and can offer some insight?

I've loved my Outlaw Audio 1050 receiver, but it was time for something new. I thought about Denon again, but after the terrible experience with Denon service, I figured I'd be better off avoiding them. And considering my efforts to show something resembling fiscal responsibility, I was looking at lower-end Denon pieces which were very ugly uninspired. These are getting incredible reviews. Designed by the legendary Andrew Jones, they remind me of a downsized Tannoy, and are priced pretty damned well. Kind of dig their retro vibe too.

OK, so I'm trying to build a stereo system from scratch for the gf. So far, I managed to find a pair of used Maggie MG10s, but I still need a dac and amp for an htpc as source. And probably a sub, but I'll save that for later. I'm trying to shoot for 100W to 250W rms, which is what the manual says I should do. Well, as I transition out of headphones and into speakers, I'm starting to think about the possibiities with the home theater so a bit of help/advice would be most welcome. I'd like to replace my old receiver and add some nice speakers for both 2 channel listening when the mood strikes me and if possible, use those as the front channels in a home theater speaker setup(I think this is the best way to go but correct me if I'm wrong). Is there a receiver that will do justice to the speakers and be compatible with the latest technology or do I really need to think dedicated amplification? At this point, I just don't think monoblocks or uber amplification will be in the car…

Well, my Harmon Kardon AVR 85 is giving up the ghost faster than I had hoped. Since I have the Smyth Research Realiser and plan to use that inline with pre outs from a surround processor to speaker amps (not for awhile, may end up with active monitors mainly in the future), I am focusing on separates now. No need for amp(s) yet, just the front end processing. HDMI switching is not a priority for me at all, since my TV has 4 HDMI inputs, and I'm only using one right now. I have the Abbys, and have been scouting around for subs off and on ever since. The Bailey sub almost never comes up for sale at a good used price, and though I know I could pick up a perfectly good sub for less, since the Bailey was made for the Abbys and is a beautiful match, I'm hopeful. I might be shooting myself in the foot by playing price games with the seller, but so far, he's been responsive. Not sure if this is the right forum, so I apologizes in advance if it's not. I'm in the market to upgrade my old HT receiver, a 5 year old HK something or other. It was bought for around $500 so it's quality is probably not quite up to par with some of the bigger boys. I'm also interested in some of that new fangled room correction technology, as my living room is not completely conducive to good sound quality (cathedral ceilings...). Ok let me explain how my speaker rig is currently setup. I have the APL 3910 and the Modwright 9100ES going into the two of the inputs on the Modwright SWL 9.0SE. The modwright pre's outputs are connected to the D-Sonic power amp. Now on to where the problem(s) come into play. I also have my denon 4308ci recievers front channel pre-outs connected to the HT Bypass input on the Modwright pre. The ht bypass input essentially ignores the volume control on the modwright allowing the volume to be controlled by only the reciever. I'm trying to decide what would be the best use of my money. I recently purchased a pair of Audioengine A5's, and I like them quite a bit. However, I recently became aware of the NHT M-00's, and I could probably afford a pair of those if I stretched my budget. The way I see it, I have two options. I could keep the A5's, add an Onix X-Sub, and call it a day. That would probably make for a pretty sweet 2.1 system. Alternatively, I could return the A5's and buy the M-00's, which I would imagine perform at a somewhat higher level than the A5's.
