  1. Thanks to Brent being a fan of BMW on Facebook I got to see the sign up for the BMW Ultimate Driving Experience Autocross thing in Maryland in June. Not sure how much you actually get to drive, but it should be fun.

  4. Went and tried a Casper today in their ridiculous LA showroom. It was pretty nice, but Jackie was not impressed. We went to a Sit and Sleep, and I walked in there pretty hostile, based on what I know about mattress salespeeps. Tried an Aireloom and was intrigued, then got on a Tempur-pedic Contour Rhapsody Breeze... Probably pulling the trigger on the Tempur-pedic tomorrow. Jackie thinks it's a little "goopy," but I love the support. And the cooling layer is cooling.

  5. Yeah, as the hours go by and the guy continues to no-show on the follow up I'm increasingly glad that I got it working again. I'll probably call shortly and tell him not to bother and just order the board from Amazon and do the repair myself. And at least I have ice for my drink later...

  8. While on the subject, my mini BHSE is nearing completion. Same size as the Carbon and just a bit bigger than Justin's amplifier unit but this one has the PSU built in. Was supposed to have a R-core transformer but that went apeshit on me so a toroid was installed in a hurry.

  9. In my very scientific testing tonight, Forza 5 on the Xbox One, I have come up with some interesting differences between the R and the S4. Unfortunately the game only has the Mk VI R so I could not get a true test. The A pillar on the Golf, being more vertical and thinner makes for a dramatically better view of the track than the S4. I am pretty sure a Mini Cooper could hide in the visibility block from the A pillar on the S4. The larger side mirrors on the S4 were much more usable than the smallish ones on the R. The R seems to be much easier to coax through the tight curves of the Nuburgring, and is more stable when using the curbs. The R is more stable and does not lumber through corners, the rear end tends to not throw off the balance and try to come around on you nearly as much as the S4. The S4 seems to be good with early power in the curves, but brakes seem to unsettle it unnaturally. Top speed on the finish line straight was dramatically different, 165 for the S4 and 131 for the R. Not sure how accurate that is, or if the Mk VII R might be a bit faster, but that long straight was a big part of the time difference between the two, as the R is quicker through the crazy windy areas. Best clean Ring lap on the Golf R 12:07 and the best time on the S4 11:32. Might have to go test drive a few more options tonight.

  12. Mid-way After the foil worth brown sugar, honey and butter On the platter On my plate with proper accompaniment Good smoke ring for the Traeger but a little dry because my sister in law came over and I had to make cocktails at the wrong moment. I still liked them very much and Alden powered through six of them easily.

  15. Bought the sport differential on my pretend car on Forza and took 15 seconds off my Nurburgring time. Seems like an important upgrade to the S4. This is the most entertaining way to car shop I have ever come across.

  24. Repairman came, took 5 minutes (maybe less) to diagnose the problem. Fried motherboard. Luckily he's a local, knows the lady that runs the parts shop and is willing to install a new one for 30% of the cost of the fridge, which seems reasonable. He just has to go pick it up, run some errands and then he'll be back. He also told me that occasionally you can simply resolder the fried connection at the undersized relay that cooked itself and get the fridge running again for short periods of time. So after he left I took the board to the office, solder the bad spot and reinstalled it. Viola! The fridge is running again. So hopefully this will allow me to save the food inside the fridge. The stuff in the freezer is already screwed and thankfully, doesn't amount to much.
