Soo.....for a few reasons, the timing was right to get Watson a buddy (mostly because I have a neighbor wanting to watch my doggies all day for at least this year). Watson was my first best dog, and this little girl will be my last best dog. She'll arrive on Thursday or Friday. She's a 10-week old Havanese. Here is momma: Daddy is a redhead: No name yet, but Lotte is what I'm going with until I meet her. Ivan can hold his own, and is mostly chill, so I'm not worried about him, but Watson is going to be crazy jealous for awhile at least.10 points

Thanks everyone!!! I had a slow day with some amp building and then took a trip to the half abandoned US Navy station here. Fun to see if as it is pretty much a large ghost town. I did get some cake, two of my friends picked me up just as I was going to bed and gave me a cake. The plan was to eat it outside but it was so windy that we lit the candles in the car. Almost set it on fire.... Anyway, a pic of my ugly mug with a cake.2 points

I don't know what the hell Stax did to fix the excess treble energy in the 009s, but my goodness, the latest revision is just fantastic. 009s + Your Gilmore Amp of Choice + SACDs is audio crack.2 points

I went ahead and built the new PS design to make sure it's stable and performs... Here's a picture of the supply set to 400V (it's just the bottom half of the PCB). I've used a few different values, but that shouldn't matter. I'm seeing about 5mV (RMS) of random noise. Could probably get that down a bit. Some of that is coming from my apartment.2 points

I'd be in for 20x 680uF/550V caps if you're going to order 100+. Right now those 20 caps take up a large sum of cash on my mouser cart.1 point

True story, at collage we had this meter to measure our lung capacity. As was so often the case I was used as a Guinea-pig for some experiments and the last one was total lung capacity. I broke the meter....1 point

Consider Phlebas is my least favorite Culture novel. Try The Player of Games or Use of Weapons. Much better than Phlebas. Me: Very good sci-fi. Well written and fast paced with lots of good post-human & transhuman elements.1 point

one thing i've found is that the phones can be extremely picky about the amount of capacitance on the 5V line. USB spec is supposed to limit this capacitance to 10uF. but in the era that the Pico was designed, nobody really cared, and more capacitance was usually added in order to filter the noisy computer power supply. So what happens is when you plug in the cable, the 5V is momentarily shorted by the capacitor and it messes up the handshaking. I've never used a computer that had a problem with this, so my guess is the phones are either more susceptible to this capacitive load or they aren't attempting to handshake again. I found that a small resistor such as 2.2-ohms in series with the 5V can fix this problem. If the resistor is too large it would no longer handshake correctly with my computer 100% of the time. This could be built into a custom USB cable, or the Pico could be hacked to add it. Earlier Picos had a resettable fuse in series with the 5V which had enough built-in resistance on its own. This fuse was later removed because it was never useful. You may be able to get it to work sometimes with repeated connection attempts or very quickly reconnecting the cable after a failed attempt this is what i found testing with Samsung phones pre-Lollipop, so i don't know if it all still applies. Never had an issue with the iPad/iPhone using the Apple CCK.1 point

Consider Phlebas The Culture Series in general and this book in particular came very highly recommend. Honestly, having finished it yesterday, I don't know what to think of it. On one hand its got some great ideas that are as fun to think about as they are to read. A post-scarcity society and their interactions with other civilizations is an awesome concept. Orbitals, Minds, Drones, Sublimated Races, all pretty cool stuff. On the other hand the plot and pacing are seriously all over the place. There are entire sections of this book that could have been left on the cutting floor as they do very little to advance either the plot or ideas. This annoyed the shit out of me for some reason. I put the book down for weeks at a time before coming back and eventually finishing it. Banks is clearly a very smart guy, but IMO he isn't a good enough writer to give meaning and purpose to some of these lesser sections of the book. --- I'm pretty torn whether or not I want to continue with the Culture series for essentially the two reasons I brought up above. I'm sure his other novels have great ideas, but I'm worried his writing style may not quite be for me. Has anyone else read these? Any recommendations on another one to try? It looks like there isn't a need to read them in any particular order.1 point

Beautiful, Mike! Put a keg in one of the corners instead of the potted plant, and it will be perfect. Nice work.1 point

Use 9DW-1-YEB9E to get $40 off (each) Michelin Pro4 Service Course tires at Steep and Cheap. I just grabbed two @25mm and the total with shipping was $67. Pretty timely since my existing tires are shagged and cracking. In other news I made it out for a good 24miler yesterday and was surprised to feel half-decent and not be terribly slow considering how little I've ridden this year.1 point
