  1. Recoated the diaphragm, reassembled and the issue persisted. Took apart the headphone plug and found the hose clamp shorting all 5 outer pins. Even without the hose clamp, all 3 wires to one ear are shorted together. Wired the driver straight to the energiser board and, sure enough, it sounds wonderful! Time to make a nice replacement cable. The old driver sounds noticeably worse than the one I re-coated, so still a massive thanks to spritzer for the tip. Pissed off that I ignored that 1) troubleshoot the easiest and most obvious bits first; and 2) electronics is the science of contacts (as the old Russian saying goes).

  3. Today’s wrist check: GRUT with CF strap. Let’s see if it gives me a rash today (I’ve soaked it in alcohol, let it dry and out-gas, and sealed the backside of it with resolene).

  5. The caps are probably 160V. I've used 1/4W resistors as well. I wouldn't think there would be any current going thru these, but haven't measured or calculated it.

  7. For what it's worth I found this multipart interview interesting. It's Chord-centric, but could apply to other FPGA implementations, including PS Audios. It’s also a comparison across DAC types. I don't know enough to determine the accuracy of the comments.

No retention, consistent grind. If it went fine enough for espresso it'd be perfect, but I'm happy with my niche for that.

  13. I use one of these https://baratza.com/grinder/vario/ Actually mine is a Mahlkoenig, but it seems they have discontinued it. https://www.mahlkoenig.de/products/vario-home . The 54mm ceramic burrs last for an eternity. Hundreds of coarse and fine settings. I set the fine about half way, and the coarse at 4 for Aeropress and 7 for French press when using Hoffman. An old friend used his on the very fine setting for use in his espresso machine. Every now and then I take the burrs out, and wash them to get rid of old coffee deposits, then brush out the housing with a small brush. Put the burrs back in - job done. Maybe once every 3 months if I remember to do it. Typical US supplier https://www.seattlecoffeegear.com/baratza-vario-burr-grinder-with-metal-portaholder which seems to be in your price range - just!

  15. For the past month, I've been using the Node 2i as a fast way to stream music. Came across a used unit on eBay for a decent price. I'm happy with it. Haven't really tested any other streamers though, but it's simple enough to control through phone app.

  16. Dunhill has broken a tooth. The tip of a canine. He has always had prominent canines (one of his nicknames is “snags”). He has had to have teeth pulled, and he was just seen by the vet a couple weeks ago for shots and a checkup. This clearly happened since then. He HATES the vet. I’m reluctant to drag his ass into the car, especially since he and Silver will be going with me to North Carolina in September when we spend a month with my partner. But I haven’t had a cat snap a fang. I don’t think the pulp is even close to being exposed, and he doesn’t seem to be in distress or discomfort (he sure fucking eats likes normal). I don’t care what it costs to be looked at, I just would prefer to save him the trip for nothing, if it’s nothing. He hates traveling. I’m not the most experienced cat owner (I’ve only been lucky enough to share my space with 5, to this point).
