So I started a project. I was listening to an Album in my queue: Prokofiev: Violin Works Tianwa Yang, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Jun Märkl 2021 And I was not too enthralled with it. Not that it was bad, but I was never drawn in by the performance or recording. It got me thinking. I have not used the streaming service for one of the main things that it could be very good at. Listen to every version of Prokofiev Violin Concerto #1 that they have. After some searching I ended up with about 47 versions. I set about a task earlier today to listen to them and find versions that like. I started by listening to just the second movement. Some I could reject right away because of the recording quality. This is suppose to be something that I enjoy, so even a good performance could have been rejected because I probably would never go back and listen to it. I was able to eliminate a pile in that first pass and I have narrowed it down to the following 18 that I will do a deep dive on. The nice part is that I don't have a real bases, a standard, for this work (like I do for the 2nd concerto). I don't know/think I will listen to all of these completely. Some sounded just interesting enough to make it to this round. We will see how it flushes out. Some, like the Perlman (upper right) and Stern (lower left) are front runners and sounded fantastic. When I was first playing all the versions, I tried not to look at who was performing before I started playing as to not be too influenced. And some really surprised me, and some major ones got dropped very fast. So, I will be listening to these and narrowing it down a bit, and then I may have some fun with the final 8 or something. I did a similar project with Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 13, II. Allegro molto e vivace. which is a lot easier as it's only 2 minutes long. And weird as I am not really much of a classical listener. But that little bit of music is one of my favorite things to hear. My takeaway was that Glenn Gould is someone I like a lot.3 points

Why does Devore O/96 sell for $16K when it's a copy of the Audio Note copy (some say pirated without paying license) of Snell type E/III?2 points

Had a great day and follow on. Went out for a meal on the day to a restaurant down a goat track. Serves devilled kidneys as a starter - what is not to like? And we have just got back from a walking weekend on Exmoor. Awesome walking, lots of hills - freezing cold (2C and a stiff wind) across the tops, including this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunkery_Hill . Also spent a day visiting a cousin who lives in Plympton. Great guy, as is his wife. Ex Royal Marine Commando (the UK equivalent as a Navy Seal), long retired - he's 78 now - but has some really hairy stories of what he got up to back in the day.1 point

You can use just about any NPN transistor with sufficient BV(CEO) and BV(CBO) rating and not too much Cob (usually means not a high current part). If the Cob is too small on the replacement part, you may want to increase the value of the compensation cap (5pf). For the 10M90S, rumor says (in its SPICE model notes) it has an internal OPAMP so it would be more complex than just a depletion mode MOSFET. In fact the actual part performs even better than the SPICE model which only has a depletion mode MOSFET and a body diode. I guess that makes the G/A/K notion more appropriate and the manufacturer can continue to charge $4 a pop.😉 You can use IXTP01N100D to replace the 10M90S in most places if you can't wait to get the amp up and running. Some resistor values need to be tuned to get to the current the circuit was originally designed for.1 point

teac nt-505 driven native usb up to dsdx8 from laptop. and ethernet for which the app sucks. waiting for the new app before i get the nt-701. playing physical discs with more than 15000 total (more than 5000 sacd and 10000 cd) is just no longer practical. There is media literally all over the house.1 point

i've been saying that the switches in a r2r dac were a real problem for many years now. especially the ttl versions. the teac ud-701n is the cheapest ($4k) of the esoteric dacs that use custom and hand matched switches. I expect that better switches will be the new big deal in the next couple of years.1 point
