  1. Back in Novato to see aja vu and their commendable version of Steely Dan Then they bought out the horn section for a few Chicago numbers And threw in a horn solo and drum solo for good measure. A fun time with all the hits.

  3. And another one's singing. Friends, this is my first home experience with stax cans, now with a sr303 bought for a dime. And I guess it'll be a long, long journey... I'm in love with this cfa, its speed and clarity are a perfect match with speed and clarity of staxes, wow... It is refined, delicate and well behaved (apart the offset that needs a screwdriver sometimes... What's the tolerance for balance and offset? Trying to keep em spot on on zero, but slowly drifts away...) Thanks Kevin! šŸ™

  4. ^^ this. I had it high in my queue and your post pushed it forward. Not an easy listen. Not that it is not really good. It is pretty great. But it is not for the faint of heart. There are a lot of notes, and they are not in the order that I would expect. But listening deeply there are themes and phrases that emerge that are very rewarding. And some tunes that are absolutely beautiful. Well recorded and minimizes the Jarrett mumble. Side note - last week when I had a friend visiting, I tried to explain - The Kƶln Concert - It was hard with someone that does not listen to jazz and had never heard of it before.

  5. The band split up in 2002, got back together 24 years later and made this album. Low expectations on that and pop isn't exactly my favorite genre. I'd say they not only produced a good album but hit it out of the ballpark good. Or at least a triple. ex.

  9. I thought so as well! I own two of Doug’s amps and they are so good I’ve never felt the need to shop for anything else. Love the woodwork on these ones.

  11. Picture 2: An ā€œaudio grade transformer ā€œ didn’t care to color code the wires properly, such that the assembly tech has to attach hand-written labels to tell them apart. Maybe only the decal is custom made? Nonetheless it shows the production volume of this kit. Picture 3 and 4: It’s funny they try to use different colored quick disconnect to do dummy-proofing. Did they not know that those quick disconnects are colored differently for a reason? Pink/red for 18GA or smaller, blue for 14/16GA and yellow for 12/10GA. They used similar wire sizes regardless of the requirement of the quick disconnect, and the yellow one is apparently oversized (loose crimping). So much for a ā€œprofessionally put togetherā€ kit.

  16. Similar thing happened with Tektronix back in the day. A big part of their business was supplying to the US DOD. But in an attempt to reduce cost the DOD placed an order with Hickock and Lavoie, saying that they wanted them to copy the Tektronix scopes. Tek got wind of it and started putting a random hole in the rear panel of the vertical plugin. When this appeared in the Hickock copy, Tektronix sued the UK government in 1961. Took a while (18 years!), but Tek won $4.5m in damages from the US Government. Described here https://vintagetek.org/clone-scopes/ So "mistakes" can show up a plagiarizer of the design.

  17. RIP Sly Stone. The word ā€œgeniusā€ is often overused, but this guy was a true musical prodigy… at least until he cooked his brain with all the drugs he was taking. His life and the life of his band were lovingly covered in a two-parter from one of my favorite podcasts.
