Darwin has a special award waiting just for you! BTW - what's your favorite booze to use while you are shorting out amps?

Ditto ^^^ Impressive build! One could make it 1/3 smaller yet. Stand the trafo on it's side - bolt it to the back panel, then chop a chunk off the heatsinks. Heat rise and noise would need to be evaluated.

Thank you. It was life altering. A giant wake-up call after 45 years of smoking and drinking. Don't do none of that anymore, caffiene is a big no-no too. (i was a coffee snob) They got me on eight heart meds and a few more to help with weight loss. So far, I've lost 42 pounds, still have 20 more to go. My diet has changed as well. Lots of fruit and green veggies now. No more danish or donuts in the morning, hello oatmeal! Pizza and delicious desserts are now a thing of the past. If all goes well, I should be off of most of the heart drugs in a year or so.

Back in '84 I rode centuries on a new all Campy Italian Faggin (pronounced fa-jeen). It looks like a red & chrome Colnago, it too was a post-olympic roadbike copy. Fast forward to today, I still have the bike - it has been hanging in the garage getting rusty. My fat ass is too heavy for the delicate thin wall Columbus frame. Four months ago I had congestive heart failure. Almost died. No pity party please, i'm just stating facts. Spent a week in ICU and had multiple surgeries (minimally invasive, mostly exploritory) Spent the following two months convalesing - lots of rest and walking short distances to get my heart going again. So about a month ago, after researching what's out there, I bought a 15 y/o Trek hybrid. I rebuilt it top to bottom. New BB bearings, pedals, chain, one rim and hub, handlebars & grips. Cleaned, greased and adjusted every little thing. Been pumping the pedals three days a week since. Am up to 20 miles a day without problems. Of course my speed is a paltry 10-12 mph average. My goal is to lose weight so that one day I can ride the italian stallion again, although at my age I doubt I'll be doing any centuries.

Happy Birthday!- And now what did you do TODAY?
Ken, wishing you the best while on the mend! This is a high side. Basically the motorcycle bucks one off of it. Kind of like an ejection seat caused by a qick change of momentum. Normally caused by a rear tire losing, then regaining traction suddenly. Braking is usually involved or a too quick left-right turning transition.- Getting Started in DIY
Heh, could be talking about the KGSSHV. Many of those pop and drop! Disclaimer: not recommended as a first project.- The Headcase Stax thread
You sound like a good candidate for a Koss ESP-950 system. Have you tried that yet? No etch, just abundant midrange and pretty good bass for a stat. The newer Stax Lambdas are all tilted toward the treble end of things. I happen to like the Stax Lambda treble and dont perceive it as "etch". To each their own... Or if you got the big bucks, try a SR-007. You're also gonna need a real good amp like a KGSS to make it play well. Figure around $4000 total for that rig.- Happy Birthday to The Monkey!!

Sounds like it could be a grounding issue. Move it back and see if the problem goes away (or not?)- i'm on a roll... the kgsshv
Sometimes ya get lucky. Just curious, what is the current rating of your SumR? Are you using inrush protection? (sorry, didn't feel like reading back)- i'm on a roll... the kgsshv
Indeedily........on both counts.- i'm on a roll... the kgsshv
So after the SumR debacle, I took Frank Cooter's suggestion and bought a stock Antec trafo. Off the shelf rated at 400ma it is a monster, some said it was too big. I have an older prototype psu (modded to rev 2) that uses stacked zeners to down-regulate the voltage. I put some 5 watt buggers in there and my KGSSHV has worked fine since.- i'm on a roll... the kgsshv
Sounds familiar. My SumR lasted about two months - it was rated at 100ma. (a bit on the wimpy side me thinks) I was running a 3 amp fuse when mine blew, trafo was humming loud. Upped the fuse to a 5 amp. Electrical stench ensued. Shut it down, SumR was fried. I believe the trafo was under-rated although it did endure two direct shorts to the psu during initial testing. FWIW it always had a loud hum during initial start-up due to the initial current draw of the psu / amp. Some kind of soft start circuit may have helped? Dunno.- A day in San Diego
So your saying that you're 420 friendly? The Gaslamp is full of trendy shops and restaurants, the waterfront walk is a nice one too. There is Seaport Village (touristy). If you like looking at old boats, there is The Star of India tour and the Midway Aircraft Carrier is interesting too. You'll need a few hours for that one. TJ is only 20 minutes away, but you'll need a passport and balls that drag on the ground to venture there. (not really, but it's still a bit on the wild side, not much to see and a lot of poverty looming everywhere.) - Happy birthday, Grahame!
