To be honest, apart from romantic portrait shots I didn't find the DC lenses (especially the 105mm) all too useful. For low light the 85mm f/1.4 did okay and above that there's the bang for buck giant- 80-200mm f/2.8D. And if I really need shallow dof, I always whip out my old 6X6. A casual snapshot, this one. Also need to get that shutter curtain fixed.

Well, canon has the 135mm f/2.8 Soft Focus which seem to produce a similar effect, however other than that overall performance is lower than Nikon DC lenses. To be sure I kinda miss the time when Nikon was the final frontier of optical design. Seems that nowadays my favorite in terms of innovation is Sony. A pitty that they won't/can't make decent non-retrofocal ultrawides for the NEX system. Zeiss/Cosina must have older rangefinder designs which can at least be updated with modern coatings.

I have used the 135DC and 105DC, really swell glass for portraits. All in all I couldn't justify getting one when for 800$ I can buy a 80-200 f/2.8D. Now my sights are set on a 300mm f/2.8 Ai ED. Some old hunting friend of my grandfather wants to sell it to me for 400$ together with a 2X converter.

I think that I've seen a bigger difference between two LCD-2's.

Not sure about the P&S. It shouldn't be too bad, for P&S I mostly trust Canon. The new ones have really good low light capabilities and optics are quite good. Most importantly- they are very small. No use buying a small sensor in a large camera.

It's a pity that old SNL skits are really hard to find in decent quality. And we might organizing another (less sausagey) trip to that spot, should be incredible to be there in a snowstorm. Too bad that snow is really scarce in Reykjavik these years. Also I'll bring some kind of gloves next time, today I realized that I have cut my hands on these rocks. There was one moment when a larger wave picked me up (turns out I'm more buoyant than I thought) and started to wash me into the ocean with the back draft so I had to hold on really hard to one of these porous rocks. Anyways- if someone of you guys ever fly over to visit Birgir, be sure to check this thing out. Cheers!

Yeah, too bad that my gf is in Latvia. And some of the places we went were quite dangerous, these lava fields can have really sharp edges and not to say that I don't have confidence in the fairer sex- I would not like to take any chances. Magnus actually did manage to fall down and cut his chin and hands on them. Other than that it was great fun, next time well try to wear some sandals or something that doesn't slip too much. Ideally one would wear climbing shoes or something like that. Here's a picture that should give you an idea what I'm talking about. And now imagine what a bad fall would do to naked skin- it's like falling on a grater.

These principles seem to work also in the country where I'm from- ex-soviet Latvia. Just be streetwise- keep away from dangerous places (seedy bars/poor neighborhoods/markets), avoid eye contact with shifty characters, don't draw unnecessary attention to yourself visually and audibly. Don't be a high value target for the muggers- stay away from flashy accessories (iBuds are a dead giveaway, so are flashy watches and jewelry), wear casual clothing, preferably- colors that are natural to the habitat you find your self in. Most importantly- maintain good posture, keep your head up, straight back and walk confidently. It sounds cynical, but to get away from a wolf you just need to outrun the sheep. Also keep in mind that you must assess the situation and behave accordingly- no need be all paranoid if the environment is not hostile, you'll just end up scaring people. Knowing body language and psychology also helps immensely. That's it for Latvia and most likely any eastern block country. To be honest, I'm very relieved here, in Iceland. No need to keep my guard up that high. I guess that crime stems from inequality.

Today was awesome- me and my buddy Magnus, we went swimming/hot-tubbing in the ocean. There is a geothermal plant about 80km from Reykjavik and it dumps all of the hot water in the ocean nearby. As the water is about 70-90°C and it's essentially a small river of it therefore the ocean nearby stays quite warm. It's like taking a hot bath only with 1.5m waves, too bad that the coast is made from volcanic rock though. And for added danger the whole place is covered in a mist that stinks like rotten eggs. Basically the waves appear from the mist. All in all it isn't too dangerous if common sense is being maintained.

The only plaster I've ever had to wear was when my dad accidentally drove a car on my arm. To not upset the grandparents I was told to say that I fell from the stairs, so until I was like 18 I actually thought this was true because I somehow materialized the false version in my memory. Btw, I was two years old when that happened. I still have a picture with me sitting on the lap of my grandpa all bandaged up and both of us showing off the plasters. He caught a moose with his car, the damn thing came through the front windshield and landed on his lap. Because the old windshields of soviet cars didn't have any tape the glass cut him up pretty bad. So he somehow got the moose in the trunk and all covered in blood and moose shit drove to the hospital. In other news- wen't to the gym finally and made three hotdogs for dinner. Regarding the bionic hand- just get a hook with the right diameter, the rest will be left for imagination.

Waiting for something to get delivered is pure torture... I'm pretty sure that all initial listening impressions will be seriously distorted. Heck, I'll rip the package open in the post office! The waiting is killing me!

Same here, bit depth alone will have a hard time messing up a well mastered AND well processed recording. Looking at those spectros (and judging from the pixels I've seen in my time) I'd say that these might as well be different masters. Of course that the HD version will have stuff going on in upper frequencies, but my hearing cuts off at 19kHz so unless I project the sound with a BPP Supertweeter in my face... Also the stuff going on in higher freq can be just noise, beats me- I have a degree in talking out of my ass, not interpreting acoustic data.

What is the hubbub about? That it's the same old stuff, only uprezzed? If so, I'd rather compare the spectros of the HD tracks and the CD or whatever version that came before.
