And the need on a practical level to have those holes plated thru, unless you take steps (vias, etc.) for double-sided boards. One would have to question the rework capabilities of this technology (as in none probably) as well. Also looks like this will only work on flexible media, so that would often be an issue as well. Would be great for quick prototypes, etc. within those constraints.

I would agree that the first seems the most natural to me.

Isn't the whole point of this device to take USB audio and convert to S/PDIF to a DAC? Wouldn't jitter measurements as well as ensuring that the data is preserved bit-perfect be the meaningful measurements? Of course you have no control of the quality of the S/PDIF interface on the DAC end , so I'm not sure how you would go about offering a meaningful measurement, particularly of jitter.

I'm not sure the surge protector would be able to test the ground? Do you know how your apartment is wired? If it is conduit, then by default it should be grounded via the conduit. If romex, then you should see a ground wire inside the outlet going to the box (I believe). If you look inside an outlet, be careful. The ppm portion of their spec is meaningless in the context of digital audio (as long as it is withing 100ppm you are fine), but the mention of phase noise is correct, as this directly translates to jitter. Measuring at 10Hz is a plus as well. I don't really understand all of this myself, but most will only publish down to 100Hz. The lower the frequency, the higher the jitter/phase noise (at least according to Jocko and gmarsh). Of course that is just the crystal spec... I think what you do with it has more of a determining factor.

They are still highly thought of in many circles. 16-bit R2R DAC. Thorsten Loech chose it for his commercial DAC (can't remember the name of the company) even though they have been out of production for a decade. Just because it is old doesn't mean it isn't good. The primary reason that R2R dacs (multibit) aren't done much anymore is cost as it is expensive to laser trim all the resistors on the die.
