I heard that pair just last week over at Justin's house, and to me, I think I actually would give them an edge over the Lambda Pros he had there. That said, I did get a better seal with the regular bias Lambdas, so that could have played a role.
-
Justin, my HP-1 wasnt stock. It didnt sound too special stock, at least IMO.
-
Or maybe it was the ~5mm of thick wool and cashmere felt I have damping that driver. We never said orthos were anything extra special stock (except the T50v1). I can also confirm that the T50rp from American Musical Supply is the new version.
-
Oh yeah, that. It was posted in the HF ortho thread a while ago, I believe. Cool stuff, I would be interested to see what comes of it.
-
Yup, placed an order shortly after I got back from your place. Now to wait for them to arrive. Brought the HP-1 in to work today though. You are right though, there is definitely plenty of room to play around with damping, though they still sound quite good stock. Those drivers sure are little bass monsters.

Heard a pair yesterday, bought when I got home. Good stuff. I also liked the SR-Lambda quite a bit, a hair more than the lambda pro, though the pads on those were not in as good condition, and didnt seem to seal quite right.

I listened to a pair of T50rp yesterday, and they really are quite good. Good enough that I ordered a pair when I got home. They had a reflex dot, felt against the vents I think, and a little bit of chassis damping, and were quite bassy, and it went nice and low. I was suspecting that thin craft felt would be about what I want in the way of damping, though we didnt really mess around with it at all. Maybe more. I will see when they arrive.

Fostex T50rp

Recalibrated my oscilloscope, measured a power supply, found that all the SMD rework I had done (or at least, most of it) was for nothing, and that my Fluke's AC measurement is crap.
-
Hah, not interested in applying there, but is there a specific reason?
-
Took, and passed, the Howard County police physical and written tests.

Hey Nate, glad to see you joining us orthoists, hope the T50RP work out for you. Those are probably next on my list to buy. And burn... The Donuts had specs?
-
Fugly, sez I. I will just stick with these ESP/950, at least for a bit. At least we all know I wont be going down Mike's route, swapping gear around each week, or at least, not until I become rich and famous in my chosen profession.

Pretty sure the T30 will need to be tweaked, so felt will be your friend very shortly. Also, they are not common enough I think for there to be many mods yet that are completely worked out, so expect to have to experiment a bit. All 6 of my orthos have needed the damping modified quite a bit to sound ideal, though I havnt heard a T30, or anything with that type ortho driver. Guzziguy, nice knife, I EDC a BM555, which is basically the same thing, but a bit different blade profile, and not black. Mike, It was mainly the typical office stuff I wanted it for, just felt like trying a wireless, and wanted something a bit nicer than the stock dell keyboards we have on everything else. Ended up replacing it with some older stuff I had at home on other rigs, and am much happier.
-
Congrats! I thought about it, and made an offer, but am basically glad you got them. I havnt heard a T30 yet, but I am completely happy with my ESP/950 now. I still love all my orthos, and they will remain my work headphones for the foreseeable future. Of course, the T30 look too open to be suitable here. Great driver in there, nice and big. Keep us updated on how you like them.

Yes, this has a decent shot of working, cutting the existing traces to the USB jack, removing the audio board, and wiring the usb pins which had been feeding the audio board to the USB jack, in a manner which doesnt completely screw with the USB wiring standards. We know that at least older versions used the PCM2705 for the audio board, so it would be fairly simple on these, but I have heard, though unsupported by photos or anything, that the current expresses use something else. Also, since the thing is sonically welded together, you would have to recase it afterwards, instead of just closing it back up. Well, maybe duct tape would work.

Those are some beautiful speakers, cant wait to see your take on them Steve. Updated rankings: Koss ESP/950 Modded Yamaha HP-1, modded Yamaha HP-50A and YH-3, modded Fostex T20 (v2, x2), Balanced deep woodied HF-1, HD580 (HD600 grills) and MB Quart QP400, then K701, Pioneer SE-700, and stock Realistic Pro30 all together. The first three dynamics are actually pretty darn close to the top three ortho flavors really, though the ortho group is pretty solid in it's own rankings. Those three dynamics are better than all the orthos for some things, but I think I enjoy the ortho group just a bit more. Hard to tell, depends on the music and my mood as much as anything. The ESP/950 though, man, it is something else entirely.

Nice, got the build planned yet? Mike, how does that keyboard/mouse work out for you? I had the same thing for my work computer for about a month or so, and ended up going back to wired. Just couldnt deal with the missed keystrokes and mouse tracking, and this wasnt even for games or anything, just porn homework and internet.

'nother vote for Nate here.

Any guesses what is causing this? Dying electret element maybe?
-
Looking real good there. I dont think I have ever seen a 10" full range driver before, though of course, I havnt looked too heavily into speaker DIY, as I dont have the workshop or skills to pull it off. What is the expected FR of these when in your cabinets? I guess the bass should be nicer than the little FE127e I am considering doing something with.

Depends what you mean optimized. To my understanding (reading what is on that page+some information posted by Gordon Rankin on diyhifi), he is using the Sabre in voltage out mode, with the mentioned Magnequest transformer converting that to SE, and then I assume following that with the DHTs, taking the output from the plate. No telling what kind of ratio the transformers have. Of course, this is mostly just assumptions on my part, so any/all of it could be wrong. Oh, before I forget: Dew Eet!

Seems you can also now get the Wavelength Crimson with the ESS Sabre now too, called the Denominator module. Bit pricey though, but I would definitely be interested in hearing it.

Happy birthday reks, all the best.
