  1. Some pics will help As you can see, there's a selector to choose the source that will be amplified and "sent" to the speakers outputs (you have two, though not selectable separately, one has lower output impedance than the other, so you can find which one matches better your speakers). The other selector, labeled "record", lets you decide which source will go through the tape out. So you might be even sending one signal through the speakers and a different one to the headphone amp or recorder. In this one you can see all the inputs available -plenty of them- and the tape in and out. Just one tape loop. Also the speakers outputs, one with binding posts suitable for bananas or spades, and the other ones just for bananas. For the porn fetishists, one of the insides: Like Nate said, you can turn the volume completely down, so muting the speakers, and then listening whatever you select for the tape out, or choosing an empty input. It doesn't have a mute function as such. The tape out should work with the amp off, but it's intended to be an "always on" unit. This is one of those things which don't sound very well until they've been on for "some time" This amp errs more to the "musical" sounding side of things than to the analytical one, but I wouldn't say it's not mainly neutral. The DT is the model to look for. Forget the "normal" non-DT units or more modern ones.
  2. Vicki, while those speakers probably aren't up to your "sound" exigences, I think the excessive bass comes from the desk acting as a resonance chamber for low freqs. I'd try taller stands, and if possible, something rigid made of metal. I'd link the speakers to the stands using Bluetack, and would decouple the stands from the desk using sorbotane cubes or half squash balls. Also moving the speakers a bit more forward probably may help. Another thing to try is filling the ports with tissue paper, so you can use light damping or more severe depending on results. If you ended up thinking that completely blocking the ports is the way to go, then I'd use thick felt or even rubber.
  3. Hehehehe, I know that feeling. Got the same problem on my PS1, the difference was that the hair wasn't onto the driver, but it was my own hair -the side whiskers-. Had to learn to set the hair before putting on the phones

  7. Various Artists - Area Reservada 4 It's a compilation album made from tunes played on a quite famous public radio show here. Includes tunes by Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Hargrove... some mixed with modern arrangements. Damn fun so far

  10. Hilary Hahn - Brahms/Stravinsky Violin Concertos
  11. Goo Goo Dolls - Live in Buffalo (July 4th 2004)
  12. - Get the fire hose, pressurized seltzer water, fire extinguisher or the like and damp that damn speaker. Then don't tell your boss it's dead. - I second John's recommendation, the Audioengine speakers sound good for casual listening, are self amplified and with an iPod dock, you'd be well served. - The Tivoli radio is also a great idea, they sound good, look nice on a desk and if FM stations in your area are decent, you may have a lot of fun listening to it.
  13. Happy Birthday Penger, sorry for the belated wishes. I hope you had a great one.
  14. Very Happy Birthday Vicki. Treat yourself and have a great one!!
  15. The magazine as such, probably isn't a bad idea. Entertaining nonetheless. It all depends on what kind of papers do it, if opinions will be accurate and honest, and how much advertising pressure is allowed biasing the writings. If they include divulging articles about electronics, acoustics, psycho-acoustics... it can even become an useful resource for many people.
  16. I haven't heard the DA10, but own the DA11. It's a nice DAC which sounds better than I expected. The headphone output works fine with low impedance cans, but I don't like it very much with the Senns, though it sounds clean, maybe "too much". IMO it sounds more "natural" than analytical, it doesn't seem a pro unit. In addition it sounds quite consistent no matter if you feed it using Toslink, AES/EBU, SPDIF or USB. I find it listenable even using the optical connection, so go figure. Mr Monkey, I think you might enjoy it, but you already have many good DACs. I'm not very sure it will "outperform" them though I'm quite sure you won't find it grossly inferior.
