  1. During thanksgiving holiday it might be hard to do hiking if it snows too much - some years it's dry and other's it wet and snowy already. But the ski resorts are all open at that time, and a ski-trip might be the thing to plan. It's a tricky time of year to come here, because it can be warm or freezing cold. Telluride that's mentioned above is pretty much out of the way if coming into Denver, as it's at the far southwest corner of the state, and even farther from Denver than Durango/Purgatory ski resort. You could choose from Winterpark (closer to denver) or Keystone, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, and Vail and find nice dining, but I haven't been in years due to my lung disease so I don't know about other entertainment there. Breckenridge has a sledding hill, as does Copper Mountain (per my son). Copper Mountain doesn't have much of a city to visit at all, and Breckenridge and Vail have more to see than Keystone (except near the highway in Frisco and Dillon). If you don't ski, you could find some great hikes in the Boulder Canyon, Flatirons, Goldengate Park, and Red Rocks areas near Morrison, again the amount of snow being the issue (or not). I don't know about Spas and hot springs being around Boulder, and the hotels are typically just average there (stayed at the Best Western and the Marriott, with Marriott slightly better). I'd be searching the web for a nice B&B in Boulder or something. Reservations for dinner at the Flagstaff House in Boulder is a good idea if you stay there (might want to check the dress code). Denver has some nice off broadway shows at the Buell Theater, and they're showing The Lion King during the time you'll be there Denver Theater & Buell Theater. and we went to see Wicked this summer. The Broncos host the Patriots that Sunday night, but you'll be gone by then. The Denver nuggets play the Spurs on Friday at the Pepsi Center, if you like basketball. I don't see anything past 11/19 for the Avalanche hockey games. I think the Casinos are a waste of time (Central City and Blackhawk), and I expect that Elitches 6 Flags amusement park will be closed by that time of year. Father out west is Glenwood Springs, which is within driving distance of Aspen and Snowmass ski resorts, with a nice hot springs pool, a few good restaurants, and places to get a massage. Plus there is small ski resort there, but it may not have good snow that time of year (much lower altitude than the other resorts). Steamboat Springs is also a favorite, with a nice hot springs pool and massage place, good skiing and hiking, and some nice restaurants. But Steamboat and Glennwood Springs are a bit farther of a drive than the first resorts I mentioned (which aren't famous for having hot springs pools). However, Idaho Springs can fill that roll as they're halfway between Denver and the typical I-70 corridor ski resorts. Good Luck! PS: The main street in Steamboat is nice for shopping (Like Breck and Vail), with many shops and restaurants, and there are also a few theaters showing current films.
  2. Well, I'm still very happy with my HE-60 and LNS, so I'm not too worried about the new Sennheiser headphones tempting me. On a different note, can the eXStatA kill a headphone if something goes wrong while the phones are plugged into the amp? I sometimes wonder if I should install the new amp boards in my Hybrid eXStatA to see if it's better than my HEV-70 amp. I've been sitting on the new parts for a few years, ever since the PSU was rebuilt but killed the Rt channel at the same time - it just wasn't worth it. Is it still not worth it, i.e. worse than HEV-70 or SRD-7 Pro via ZDT amp? FYI - I've already had two sets of amp boards die about 5 yr ago, both sets stuffed by Wiatrob. The new ones were stuffed by a head-fi hobbyist, and nobody we all know.
  3. One of the smarter things we did during the huge crash in 2008 was to continue paying into our 401(k), because everything we bought that summer is worth almost three times more now. And, we didn't sell off any investments after the crash, so when the market recovered our money had doubled between 2008 and 2012 when we did sell to help pay for our first kid in college. It still only brought us close to the 2007 value before the crash. It sucked to not earn anything between 2007 and 2012, but at least we didn't lose and actually had about $3K in capital gains from the time we started the fund in 2002 until we sold in 2012. ( we started at zero in 2002 and sold at $28,000 in 2012 )
  4. Happy Birthday! Strangley, I posted this once before in this thread, and I ended up in the Postjack welcomes new members thread. Not sure how that's possible, especially since a simple swipe right on my iPad took me back here as the previous page visited.
  5. Wow, one second I'm posting in the happy birthday thread and I come out of the worm-hole into this thread!
  6. Massdrop - two nice Seiko watches I found on sale: Seiko SARB dress watch Seiko Prospex Kinetic Diver I have all these nice Rolex and Omega watches, and still have the hots for the Prospex Kinetic Diver. Something is wrong with me.
  7. While we're on a roll here, are you sure you didn't mean lack of "conscience" or "empathy", since the guy had to be awake to say no?
  8. Oh Fuck! I'm been so involved in all the crap happening to our family that I didn't notice the market drop so fast and big. What is driving this?
  9. I didn't even know about this till just now - hope all is well!
  10. The combination of her AVN of the Talus and her age rule her out as good candidate for an ankle joint replacement. In her group they have a high rate of failure and redo's that can eventually lead to amputation. The tibeo-talar ankle fusion really is her only option for losing the wheelchair and crutches. As for my opiates, I was on 60mg per day of long acting Oxycontin in the rehab hospital for 2 weeks, and weaned by the doctors to 40mg day upon discharge in January, then I weaned myself to 20mg a day by the end of the month. After that I weaned myself to 10mg once a day in February, and then I went cold turkey on valentine's weekend (I was sick for 5 days). Once I was able to do that, I lost my ability to get anyone to refill the Oxycontin long acting meds for as needed use. But they've also been reducing the short acting med quantities, just like they would with a normal healing person, which I'm not. So, I can get 30 short acting Oxycodone 5mg each month and that's it, unless I try to find a pain management specialist. As long as I could take an Oxy at bedtime to sleep through the pain, with an Aleve every 8 hours, the pain was tolerable. But I'd still have to take an Oxy in addition to Aleve during the day in order to walk at all without crutches for just a couple hundred feet. Without it I can't walk at all without a cane/crutch, even for short distances to the bathroom.
  11. So my daughter and I went to see the orthopedic surgeon for a follow up on our injuries, and it's not all good despite both our left ankles healing completely with the plates and screws in them. Her AVN of the right talus bone has lead to severe arthritis, and she is still unable to walk 8 months after the accident. Her range of motion is limited such that she can't dorsi-flex her right ankle for walking, even with crutches. So she has to externally rotate her right hip to move her leg behind her to walk on crutches and her range on crutches is limited, which could lead to secondary problems. So we bought her a lightweight wheelchair, out of pocket, because her insurance was too slow to have one purchased by the time she left yesterday for her semester abroad. The school is making accommodations for her disability, but It will still be difficult for her. When she graduates in Dec 2016 she'll need an ankle fusion. My left femur hurts as bad as it did in March when I was allowed to start weight bearing (had to delay walking due to my ankle) and it is less than 50% healed on X-rays last week. I still can't get a bone growth stimulator for another month, because it hasn't been 9 months. My doctor tried after 6 months but Kaiser med insurance denied it until it's been 9 months of non-union. On top of that, I've been instructed to stop non-steroidal anti-inflamatories (Aleve, Motrin) because it can inhibit bone healing. Lack of Aleve is killing me because Tylenol hardly makes a dent in the pain, and my fibromyalgia is worse without it, and I only get enough Oxycodone to take one a day (bedtime). Continued prayers are appreciated, but I'm afraid we're being refined by fire right now. It looks like my son will be pushing me around in a wheelchair at CanJam @ RMAF this year, since the carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndrome I got on the right side from using crutches has come back after I ran out of therapy visits.
  12. Try a polarized lens in front of the camera lens? Maybe even one for another camera and hold it there is using a phone camera?
  13. Well, I hope you get it - the only one I'd miss is the Tudor as well, but the GO is more special.
  14. Seiko 5 is nice - I gave one to my older brother for his birthday last year, and I gave away my other one last month but can't even remember who got it. I'm getting old-timer's disease... I still have one from the 70's but misplaced it last summer, and it really needed to be serviced - so cheaper to just replace it than do a COA on it.
  15. Here you go! Strapcode 20mm expanding bracelet clasp in 316L I used a $60 eBay shark mesh for the decent chain mail portion, and replaced the clasp which was decent (all polished stainless, looked high quality). The links look about as nice as the ones on my two Omega shark mesh. The $25-30 shark mesh on eBay are much poorer in quality, with mismatched link sizes so the rows can look slightly diagonal and it doesn't bend right. So total bracelet cost was about $130.
  16. I also added a Strapcode micro-adjustable clasp to the shark mesh on my Seamaster Pro ceramic chronograph today. I'll get some photos soon, but I'll be able to expand the bracelet when my wrist swells up in the heat of summer. It's not tight right now, so it may become too loose for this coming winter. But I can remove another row of links from the 6 o'clock side, at which point I may have to leave it slightly expanded all the time during the summers.
  17. Yes, it's also the same bracelet that came with my 1976 Speedmaster. Some earlier 68-69 Speedy bracelets have sharper more rectangular edges on the links, and some have this 1171 with the more rounded edges on the links. I was able to adjust the clasp to the second from smallest setting, and not have to remove any links for my 7.25" wrist. I think it could adjust between a 7.12" to 8.25" wrist without ever touching the links, with the smallest setting fitting my son and the largest setting fitting my brother (or you).
  18. Good job. I typically wont touch the watch head/case myself, but I've brushed many bracelets in the past. That's a wild story about what the watch and ring have been through, and I'm not just talking about the VW motor (bad watchmakers are all over the place). I always make sure my watchmaker is comfortable restoring the finish to factory, or only cleaning it up without touching the deep stuff to avoid softening the edges. I tell him it's okay if he thinks someone else could do a better job, but so far he's never let me down. It's possible that if you wanted to totally remove the marks on the bracelet that it could be burnished or laser welded and then re-brushed, but those marks are part of the history of the watch and probably not visible without a 2x loupe or higher. I installed the 1171 bracelet on the Seamaster 300 today. I might like it better on the NATO, but that strap was either too loose or too tight with the hole spacing. So far it has only gained 2.0 seconds in 48 hours while on the wrist, so it's a keeper.
  19. Got this in the other day - a 1960's Omega Seamaster 300 from NOS parts except for vintage Omega 565 movement (from Watchco), which included an 1171 bracelet and a shark mesh bracelet. I was lazy and put it on the first NATO I could get to. It's only gained 1.4 seconds in the first 24 hours on my wrist, and the lume glows like a torch after being in the sunlight and then going inside or into the shade.
  20. FUCK COMCAST 4 weeks ago we made a Comcast appointment for a 3-5P window tomorrow, at the house where my daughter is moving into for school. She's in charge of all the utilities and cable, in return for a reduction in her share of the rent. About 1:30PM today one roommate asked us to see if we could get a second cable box for the basement. Comcast said not tomorrow because the updated install would run too long into the next appointment. They offered to come Tuesday and we said NO FREAKING WAY DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING, we'll see you tomorrow. CS even gave me an address to pick up an extra cable box later when we were ready. Tonight at 7:50PM I get an email from Comcast "Good News you order is confirmed", with an appointment for Wednesday morning when nobody will be there to meet them. They made the change, even though another CS rep tonight agrees when reading the notes that we asked for nothing to be changed. Now they're booked solid until Tuesday AM, with no procedure to cancel the new customer who called today and took our slot tomorrow. I'm the IT guy for 9 girls/roomates in the building, and Saturday was the only day I could be there to make sure they set everything up properly to work with the Airport Extreme that we prepared for them, and to set up user accounts for them (my daughter's admin account is set up, but the other 8 girls will have to share 4 accounts that we can't set up until we're activated). We were able to switch the appt from Wednesday to Tuesday 8A-10A, which fortunately was the ONLY time all week that my daughter or anyone else can be home to meet the tech. If I didn't have 2 doctor appointments on Tuesday I'd drive up to Boulder to help out. I asked if I could do the install myself on Saturday, but they couldn't promise that the Comcast store in town would have the equipment that we need on Saturday. And even though the last group of girls renting the building had operational cable and internet, they said that if I do the install and it doesn't work that I have to pay $100 for them to FUCKING INSTALL THEIR SHIT later! They should be offering to make things better for us, but they know they have us bent over and they're putting on a rubber glove.
  21. In hindsight my pics weren't very good, as I didn't know what parts take to photos of with my crappy iPhone camera and poor light. Here they are.
  22. I recall that you once looked at pics of my WEE guts and said it looked safe. Was I mistaken? It's been in a box ever since someone offered to buy it but backed out 2 years ago, so I suppose I should not bother to unbox it and use it?
  23. It takes a brave person to say no and keep looking for their dream job in this day and age where most people would jump at the first offer out of fear of missing out.
