Little South African digression, but behind Churchill in that photo, in the trench coat, is Field Marshal Jan Smuts, who first led the Afrikaners against the English in the Boer War (1899 - 1902) and then went on to serve in the British War Cabinets of both the First and Second World Wars and to be the only signatory to both the peace treaties that ended them. The master of Christ's College, Cambridge -- where he studied law -- once said of him that "in the 500 years of the College's history, of all its members, past and present, only three have been truly outstanding: John Milton, Charles Darwin and Jan Smuts." Which is a pretty decent reference!
