Just came back from Steven Wilson -- that was fantastic.  They played the entirety of Hand. Cannot. Erase. (except for Transience) interspersed with Raven, Watchmaker, Index, Harmony Korine, Lazarus, and a couple others.  Lots of multimedia stuff (I'm almost at the point where I don't want to hear Raven without the video), and fantastic playing, especially by Nick Beggs and Adam Holzman.  The guitarist was fantastic, and the drummer was spot on (although not Gavin...although no-one is).  Darn near perfection.  Slightly different setlist -- my friend in the UK went, they played the entire album first, then all the other stuff after.  Here, they played up to about Home Invasion, then shifted to Index and played a bunch of other stuff, then played the rest of the album, then played Watchmaker, and then Raven as the final encore.

Really cute girl next to me, too.  Alone...wearing a Marillion T-shirt (indicating that she genuinely likes prog, for those that don't know -- a genre I am very fond of).  I left her alone, though, it'd probably be creepy being asked by a guy 2ce her age for her phone number...dagnabit.  Sometimes I hate being me.

If it makes you feel better, my wife and I have almost no overlap when it comes to musical taste.  Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if she did like the stuff I liked.

 

By the way, you have such an eclectic musical taste, I'm sure whoever you find will like something you are into

I'm not that worried about it, but thanks.  I have to admit, in hindsight, I really admire the fact that she wasn't afraid to go to a concert alone -- many people are too codependent for that (including my friend Dave with whom I went last night).

Going to see Steven Wilson at The Grove in Anaheim on June 12th.  I have not been to a concert in a long time, and I am psyched as he will play pretty much all of Hand. Cannot. Erase. from what I can see.  Brilliant album.

 

Saw this last night.  Fucking.  Great.

I just got back from taking my daughters to see Taylor Swift, and it seriously was the best "big" concert I've ever seen.  

That young lady does not fuck around.

Colin will be very disappointed to hear that.

I have never really been a Foo Fighters fan, but apparently Dave Grohl broke his leg during a concert in Sweden... and kept playing!  He must have been out of his mind on pain meds, but he is one tough mofo.

What the hell is he playing?

I am disappoint.

They are.  They light up and make sound when hit.  Also there is a console on the table.  He alternated between them.

That show looks like it would annoy me enough that I would go onstage and unplug their noise makers.

On Sunday I've watched the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra playing Sibelius' 7th Symphony. It's something that puts things into perspective – as much as I think that what I get from high-end speakers or headphones is incredible, nothing begins to approach what it feels like to listen to one of your favorite pieces of music been played by a full orchestra on one of the front seats. It was an unbelievable experience and I don't think I've ever been moved by music like that before.

 

And Roberto Minczuk, the conductor, was brilliant as always – I've seen him conducting Tchaikovsky's 6th (shame I wasn't as much into it then as I am now) and Sibelius 5th before, and what he did on Sunday was easily on par with Karajan's or Segerstam's performance of the 7th.

At an actual church. Not smoldering, but I am molting...or perhaps that's the sunburn peeling.

I'd be remiss if I didn't include the obligatory...

Okay, that was fantastic.  They even recreated the viral video that made them initially famous...except with a choir.  They played just about every song I would've wanted them to, except for "Cannon" (my favourite), but they surprised me by playing "Shades" as the closer, my favourite track from their second album.

 

Two guitars, piano, violin and cello, and they all sing.  So imagine Dead Can Dance meets Sigur Ros meets ... I don't know, Crosby Stills & Nash?

 

Really glad I went.

Another fantastic show.  I was late for the first opener(s?), but I got to see Night Idea's set in their entirety, and ... INSTA-FAN!  Math-rock/alternative -- totally dug everything they did.  They need someone to man their merch booth, though, I could only buy a shirt, even though they had a cassette and a 7", because no-one there knew the price.

 

And Little Tybee were fantastic.  I learned of them because my hero Josh Martin is in this band (he of the glitch tapping), but for many of the songs, he added more texture than guitar "pyrotechnics", so the songs were front and center, which is fine -- prog folk.  But then they did some instrumental breaks (the entire ensemble, there was very little soloing), and we got to hear Josh's tasty, tasty playing.

 

The lead singer's voice reminds me of Jeremy Enigk, and the music isn't that far off (a bit more energetic and upbeat, and add violin).

 

So yeah, really glad I went.

First free summer concert of the season at Stow House in Goleta. Mezcal Martini, a Salsa and Latin Jazz band.

Pitchfork music festival happening this weekend. Yesterday was Natalie Prass, Jessica Pratt, Mac Demarco, Panda Bear, Chvrches, and Wilco. Not sure what early stuff we're seeing today but will end with New Pornographers and Sleater Kinney. Tomorrow I think we're just going for Courtney Barnett and then bouncing immediately. Don't know anyone else playing but nofuxgiven.

The wife and I went to Melody Gardot this evening. She started more than half an hour late, and to be honest, a bit cold, at times I had the feeling she was doing playback. But by the third tune the show warmed up and we've had a lot of fun. She's a show-woman well worth attending live, her band is great too.
