Briefcases, Bags, and the Murse

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a replacement for my now worn-to-a-frizzle CountyComm Bail-Out bag.

Has anyone put the Red Oxx CPA under the seat in front of them? Does it fit? Is there any room left for your feet? Does it really stand up and not topple over like they say in the ad copy?

  • Okay I must have missed something. What the heck is BAI? The only super low thing I can think of is Brent's Annual Income.

  • Empire Builder to replace my stolen Tumi briefcase.  Needed to switch it up to break the bad karma.  Oh, and I am going to have Jeff wire it with a self-destruct mechanism to fuck up anybody who takes

  • I could easily spend 10 BAI at Saddleback Leather Co.

Hey Mike, what was that smaller bag you carry of the EDC variety?  I remember seeing it on a couple of trips to Florida but never noted the brand.  Kind of large book sized insert maybe?

Typically, I use a Goruck GR1 or Vertx EDC Courier.  I don't remember what I had in Tampa at Hunahpus Day.  I have sold some bags since then so not sure what else I may have had at that time.

I was looking at these, and I realized I finally figured out exactly what I want -- I want a vertical messenger bag that can also work as a backpack (I.E. with backpack handles)...or a backpack that also has a handle on top (for the short, briefcase carries), and a strap (as a proper messenger bag or satchel).

Something like this.  Is there anything that just stands out as the obvious choice, here?  Is Saddleback a good company, should I go ahead and just get that one?

(I've been having shoulder problems -- probably a barb or whatever they're called -- so carrying it satchel-wise for any distance at all is starting to become problematic, with a laptop, and two heavy books.  I didn't even bring the books in today.)

So it's looking like I'm going to have to travel at least a few times for work this year and as a result I'm reviving this thread and looking for some advice for a good carry-on bag.  My Red Oxx mini-ruk will serve "personal item" status quite nicely and I'm hoping to make all of these trips (which are all under 5 nights) without checking a bag.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

[Edit] There's currently a screaming deal on Amazon on the Tumi Tegra-Lite Max Continental Expandable Carry-On but it seems that its dimensions, specifically the 16" width, do not conform to many major airline's definition of a carry-on (limit of 14").

I should have qualified, there's no way that I'm buying a bag that doesn't have wheels.  At least one big trip this year is going to involve kids and I'll be doing enough of a Sherpa impression during that without a duffel bag.

I'm not nearly the beast you are, Mike.  I'm getting soft and like dragging things efficiently rather than carrying them.

You are young and therefore there is hope.  Goruck GR2.

Its not checked size, but I like my Briggs and Riley roller pretty well, and it has held up admirably.  I use my HC edition air boss for those sorts of short trips.

Rimowa Air or Salsa with wheels. Super light and sturdy.

Does anyone have recommendations for checked luggage?  I am going on a 10 day trip to Germany in a couple of weeks and don't know if I can pack everything in my Aeronaut.   I think people are fond of Briggs and Riley?

I like Rimowa luggage. We have some metal stuff, which is cool but heavy, and we have some plastic stuff, which would be great.  Extremely light, four wheels, lots of size options, convenient packing arrangement in two halves.  Check it out.

I like my Briggs and Riley for the money, but it is definitely imperfect.  Rimowa looks very nice.
