jose Posted April 27 Report Posted April 27 9 hours ago, mikeymad said: Random Access Memories by Daft Punk (2013) https://open.qobuz.com/album/0886443927087 Example: Some testing - so I might as well have fun. I love that album, it won 5 Grammys including Best Album. I remember Nile Rodgers commenting that it was the first dance album to win a Grammy since "Saturday Night Fever." 1
HiWire Posted April 27 Report Posted April 27 It's a brilliant album. I hope it inspired people to check out Giorgio Moroder and other great musicians of the period. 1
Dusty Chalk Posted May 1 Report Posted May 1 Since I couldn't go on their FIRST NORTH AMERICAN TOUR, this:
mikeymad Posted May 2 Report Posted May 2 More STAX testing. Sibelius: Violin Concerto - Lemminkäinen Suite by Ava Bahari (2026) https://open.qobuz.com/album/eipd34vton1nt example: Nice recording - performer I didn't know. And a leftover from listening to MTT (rip) Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 & Contredanses, WoO 14 by Orchestra of St. Luke's, Michael Tilson Thomas (1989) https://open.qobuz.com/album/g8dw9cvvp4q0a Example: Also a good recording it has been a long time since I have listened to it (all owned by Sony now). 6
mikeymad Posted May 2 Report Posted May 2 New Gold Hits by The Four Seasons (1967) https://open.qobuz.com/album/0603497895991 Example: Pretty much pulled it for ^^ Beggin', but got hooked on the album, Good stuff.
mikeymad Posted May 4 Report Posted May 4 Hemispheres by Rush (1978) https://open.qobuz.com/album/0060254724382 Example: Have I not listened to Hemispheres on headphones? Countless times on my main rig, loud, probably too loud. But on STAX tonight, so much movement and panning. Crazy things going on that I had not caught before. From one of my self professed favorite albums. The 24/192 probably helps as well. 4 1
Dusty Chalk Posted May 4 Report Posted May 4 Nice. I just waxing poetic about that first concert feeling. Quote https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/rush/1979/capital-centre-landover-md-bd1dd46.html Jumpscare intro with all the lights still on with the opening swooshies from the beginning of 2112, the entire theater erupting with hoots and hollers and applause...and dashing for their seats, or rushing the stage Then continuing playing an abbreviated version of the whole thing Early versions of Spirit of Radio and Freewill An epic medley of The Trees/Cygnus X-1/Hemispheres/Closer to the Heart Reggae intro to Working Man/normal version/medley of other early songs/drum solo for the finale La Villa Strangiato for the encore (my favourite track of theirs) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elJCPtdFKY0 What was special about that first time feeling was ... the presence that those 3 guys had. I had seen concerts before, but never had I anticipated seeing one of my favourite bands live so much before then.
robm321 Posted May 5 Report Posted May 5 Back to the raw and gritty style of their early stuff. Enjoyable, if not remarkable. Qobuz: https://open.qobuz.com/album/gkphye0rw4wtb ex. 2
mikeymad Posted May 6 Report Posted May 6 Go by Dexter Gordon (1962) https://open.qobuz.com/album/0060253764804 Example: The 2013 remaster is not as hot as the RVG 1999 version (example), but I think I like the newer one a bit more. It takes a half step back and much less tape hiss. Anyway, too many Blue Notes, so little time... 3 1
mikeymad Posted May 7 Report Posted May 7 One of These Nights by Eagles (1975) https://open.qobuz.com/album/dalvoj1umrs8k Example: New Deluxe Edition dropped, so I thought I would check it out. I grew up with these tunes, but don't really listen to them much at all anymore. I like that they seem to have taken cues from some of the other recent deluxe editions. A new remaster of the studio tracks plus a full concert recording from the 1975 tour. Nothing else - perfect. The remaster sounds good, I feel that remasters are getting more subtle over the years. The old, all sliders go up, approach seems to be fading. The live is very country, leaning towards country rock. Before the 1976 Hotel release, it is the early more country songs (no complaints). 4
Dusty Chalk Posted May 7 Report Posted May 7 Archive, Glass Minds (Expanded Edition) https://tidal.com/album/519187771/u Euro-indie/alternative/space rock/shoegaze/trip hop/??? (really fucked up) example:
jose Posted Monday at 06:41 PM Report Posted Monday at 06:41 PM Another vinyl record I bought in London.... it needed a couple of passes through the ultrasonic cleaner but it's in perfect condition now. Baby Huey - Hard Times 2
mikeymad Posted Monday at 07:35 PM Report Posted Monday at 07:35 PM Chopin Orbit by Hayato Sumino (2026) https://open.qobuz.com/album/owks3ep62vp8b Example: Interesting mix from Cateen with originals (example) and interpretations of classical works. Overall a good listen. Well presented by Sony, with the credits being Hayato and a pile of engineers.
mikeymad Posted Wednesday at 05:44 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 05:44 PM One of the louder Tiny Desk sets - enjoyed. 1
blessingx Posted Wednesday at 09:42 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 09:42 PM Speaking of Tiny Desk, lots of talk about DakhaBrakha here five or so years ago, but there was a Tiny Desk five further years back. 1 1
skullguise Posted Thursday at 02:38 AM Report Posted Thursday at 02:38 AM They are a fun listen.....I can't remember if it was posted here, but I also liked another Ukrainian group, Yagody.... 2
