Jazz Off the Record

In the late 1960s, the recording industry lost interest in America’s greatest art form. But in a small, dark club on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, jazz legends were playing the best music you’ve never heard.

Ex. ‘More than Davis and perhaps even more than Coltrane, Tyner is the true architect of what followed. His signature harmonic device, the fourth chord, was disseminated on Coltrane’s hit recording of “My Favorite Things” in 1961 and widely adopted overnight. Lacking the note that would make a chord either major or minor, fourth chords have a mysterious stasis, refusing to commit to the system of tonality that defined European art music. The effect was both ancient and contemporary: a circle of stones, lit by fire, right next to a jet plane.’

Carol Kaye Is Being Honored by the Rock Hall. She Doesn’t Care.

The first time Paul McCartney played the Beach Boys’ 1966 album “Pet Sounds,” he was struck by the grand ambition of the music as well the intricacies of tracks like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”

“And as I was a bass player,” McCartney noted in a recent interview, “I listened closely to the bass parts.”

Like most people, McCartney assumed the song’s melodically affecting rhythms were the work of Brian Wilson. “Then later I looked at the credits,” he said, “and I saw it wasn’t Brian on bass, it was this girl, Carol — Carol Kaye. That was quite a shock to me. I started looking into what else Carol played on, and she was on everything.”

Do other people hear those McCartney quotes in a bad impression of his voice, or is it just me?

Yeah, I was just going to mention, I remember all the stories from Steve Hoffman about having to cook the tapes so they could at least be run through the player. Movies also have all their own issues.

Excellent article on the Michael Jackson estate’s efforts to monetize his complicated legacy.

Jackson’s estate, Reed says, has “very good lawyers, they’ve got infinite money and they have a vast, valuable asset that they need to protect.” They are “monetizing it very capably,” he says. “They’re on a roll.”
