I dropped by the bookstore today on my way home from work and leafed through a copy of the Stereophile "Recommended Components" issue. It was depressing, and quite unbelievable. For one thing, there's an average of 10-15 components in the "Class A" list in every single category of gear. This is close to and in some cases exceeds the number of components listed in "Class B", and in all cases it exceeds the number of "Class C" components. That ain't right. Am I supposed to believe that there's more "best of the best" gear than solid decent bang for the buck stuff? That for every piece of "above average" gear there's 5 pieces of "best of the best gear"? I also noted th…

Cubs legend Ron Santo dead at 70 - Daily Pitch: MLB News, Standings, Schedules & More - USATODAY.com If there's any other Cubs fans around, they'll probably care to know about this. Unfortunately I never knew Santo as a player, only as a commentator, but I grew up listening to him on WGN Radio and am very saddened by this.

Any suggestions on how to properly clean out a battery compartment that had a minor battery leak? There's not much residue, but was curious what my best options are.

Seeing as the GOP and our President have such low approval ratings these days, and that even elder GOP personalities have warned about a rough election for the Republicans, I was wondering if anyone here, who may have voted Republican in the last couple of elections, is planning on voting differently come November?

EU fines Intel record $1.45B for sales tactics - Yahoo! Finance Anyone have more background on this? This quote is pretty bizarre. "The European Commission also told Intel to immediately cease some sales practices in Europe, though it refused to say what those were. Intel said it was "mystified" about what it was supposed to change but would comply with the "extremely ambiguous" EU order." Is it kosher to order someone to stop doing something and then not tell them exactly what they need to stop doing? Moreover the money goes to the EU and not to AMD...?

<rant> Could they stop with the freaking downtime every day or so? It always seems to happen when I'm right in the middle of writing a long PM or post, or when some Google search that I really want to see links there. I mean seriously, with all the advertising and donations, they should have nice servers, right? </rant>

I'm sorry if this is the wrong venue for what I'm about to say, or if this is inappropriate, but I'm just about fucking fed up with this Democratic Congress. What pushed me over the top was the FISA bill: if you haven't heard, the Senate passed FISA with the immunity provision. Now, as a self-professed liberal, I am fucking sick and tired of the current Democratic leadership. Time and time again they fucking capitulate and bend over for their opponents. When the fuck are they ever going to fucking grow some balls and stand up for once?!?! Man, I thought I was pretty skeptical about government when I was in school, but working in DC around the Hill has made me even…

With Abi here, there really isn't much we wanted.... except this: It started out as an April Fool's Day joke on ThinkGeek. So many people wanted it to be real that they went ahead with the project. It arrived today. A bit pricey for a novelty, but Abi will be the coolest and geekiest kid at the slumber party in her Tauntaun sleeping bag. And no, they don't smell bad on the inside

The Compact Disc is 30 years old - at least if you work back to when the platform first went on sale to punters. The first commercially release disc and player - respectively, Billy Joel's 52nd Street and Sony's CDP-101 - were introduced in Japan on 1 October 1982. The disc was released by Sony's recorded music subsidiary, CBS. http://www.reghardware.com/2012/10/01/compact_disc_is_30_years_old/ I remember first hearing about the CD when a fellow student enthused about this amazing new music format in an article in The Scientific American. He was amazed that thanks to built in error correction, you could drill holes in the disc, and it would still play! (according …
