I know nothing about classical music. I've picked up the following albums over the last few years at local record sales thinking I would try to get into classical. I've been listening to the local classical station and I'm trying to get into it but it's a bit overwhelming. Anyway, I'm curious if what I have is good in terms of whether those of you that are into classical would say, that's a great, good, bad, whatever version. I hope that makes sense. Mozart Symphony No.40/Hayden Symphony No.45 "Farewell" London Symphony - Antal Dorati Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields' Chamber Ensemble - Mendelssohn: Octet Op.20 String Quintet Op.87 Bruch Violin Concerto No…

A pair of prodigious platters of plastic. Sorry. Couldn't help myself. An alliterative illiterate. It's two 180 gram 33.33 rpm disks - beautiful, dead flat, silent, excellent sounding pressings, in proper audiophile plastic-lined inner sleeves (Somehow, when an album costs the best part of fifty bucks, I think a Nitty Gritty sleeve is in order. Thank you very much.) The sound is head and shoulders above the 44.1 digital version - guitar timber, vocal, just about everything. This is the first Junkies album since way back, Caution Horses or Black Eyed Man maybe, where the vinyl has sounded that much better than the CD for me. There's a bit of tape pre-echo (print-t…

I thought this article was pretty interesting, where US artists want to receive royalties for their songs being played on the radio. Here is the beginning of the article: Not sure how to feel about this one. What do you guys think? Should artists be getting royalties for their song being played on the radio? Artists want royalties for song being played on the radio

Listen to the entire Dark Night of the Soul album over at NPR. "In addition to Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse (Mark Linkous), other artists appearing on Dark Night of the Soul include James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, David Lynch, and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils."

All of the sudden I have become very interested in the Pre-Beethoven composers. It started with Bach's Mass In B-Minor (Gardiner) and moved on some of Haydn's symphonies (Sir Colin Davis). Beyond that all I have is whatever Mozart and Bach shows up on the Living Stereo releases. So any classical period or even earlier stuff you could recommend would be wonderful. I'm looking for specific recording recommendations, rather then "get mozart's 40th" type recommendations. Here is a small wish list I've compiled from various sources: Amazon.com: Jack Johnson: Classical Period Thanks!

In the Krautrock thread Tony mentioned Magma. Since Magma is Zeuhl and not Krautrock I volunteered to create this thread to talk about Zeuhl and related bands. I am not sure how many know what this Zeuhl stuff is all about so I will give a brief introduction and list a few bands/albums that I like. Zeuhl School basically amount to Magma influenced bands, but there is a lot of crossover into Gong and RIO territory as well. Zeuhl is an adjective in Koba

We have enough fans, that I thought I'd start a thread. New song: Blue Lips. Jeff Lynne on production, pretty sweet. (See the comment about the echo, for example.)

So I was trying to look up a recent purchase -- Prokofiev "premiere" recording of Queen of Spades with On Guard for Piece -- and I wandered over to their website which led me to their online store, which appears to sell (in British Pounds Sterling) lossless audio. Anyone know what resolution theirs are at? I see "24/96" on the corresponding CD page of most recordings that interest me, but the CD's are obviously not 24/96, and I see nothing on the audio download page.

Just got an email from Mosaic Records and they mentioned the Jazz Record Collectors’ Bash next weekend. Thought those around New Jersey may be interested. Make sure to watch "Ghost World" beforehand.

The past couple years just before the CanJam I've placed an order for ~10 CDs at Acoustic Sounds to have some more high quality stuff to show off the gear. And it never fails that Norah Jones is still the only CD anyone wants to put in. So, I'm looking for some suggestions this time. Really well recorded stuff in a variety of genres, must be good music and not just impressive sound, and SACD is a major plus

Thinking about buying a copy of Metallica's S&M CD, noticed there is both a normal US release and a Japanese SHM-CD release. Never seen SHM-CD before, so no idea if it is worth the extra money. Is it different mastering, or just some sham to get more money out of folks? The actual encoding cant be all that different, unless they dont care about backwards compatibility.

The MP3 download that comes with the new Ryan Adams LP (Cardinology) has leadin/out groove and surface noise effects. Maybe I don't get out enough or something, but this strikes me as pretty strange. There must be a story behind it. Does anybody know? -Carl

OK found the site livephish.com for phish experts out there, any here that are standouts for me to start with? eg, any from the Live Phish I-XX series worthwhile? I may start with the one where they cover Quadrophenia. There's just too much here to wade through. Also I much prefer the live albums, but any must-own studio albums?

My baby gets married within the month and we haven't been able to agree on song for our father/daughter dance. Neither one of us dances particularly well so something easy to move too is required. Suggestions appreciated.
