Ok, the music forum needs help! I thought we could make a thread for the female vocal fans, something that could be bumped with new stuff as time goes on. To keep this easy on the eyes and those who are looking to find some new female vocal music let's limit the number of artists/bands that you recommend to a total of 5. I'll set up a format that can be pasted so we have a bit more than a list of names and albums. Artist: Album: File Under: Recommended For Fans Of: Artist Website: Sample Listen: Music Best For: Reviews: My Thoughts: Artist: Splashdown (aka Melissa Kaplan) yes some of you know my love for her voice from another forum Al…

I was just listening to J.S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 (a delayed reaction to Hallowe'en) when I had a bit of an epiphany... why do people send their kids to take piano lessons when they could be learning the pipe organ (common sense answer: because pipe organs are crazy big and complex and expensive and rare)? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toccata_and_Fugue_in_D_minor,_BWV_565 The Wikipedia article suggests that Bach may have composed the piece to test pipe organs... do people use pipe organ repertoire to test their music systems? Listening to this piece on my computer speakers, I can understand why pipe organs are used for liturgical purpose…

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssss....do I like the East Coast..... '' It now looks as though we'll be undertaking a serious (3 week or so) N. American stint in June/July after Nearfest. Things still await absolute and final confirmation (and relevant work visas, naturally), but it looks as though we'll be paying visits to the following places at least: NYC, Washington, Cleveland, Chicago, Buffalo, Annapolis, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec City and Montreal. I expect (I hope, for the sake of the budget!) that more will appear in due course. Sorry that I can't give fuller information at this point, but I'd better wait until everything is signed, sealed, delivered.... And sorry, but…

Stumbled across this today, and thought it was worth sharing. About as good as a YouTube video can sound, that's for sure! Funny bit with Michael Fremer towards the end. If you're ever driving past Salina, KS, you've just GOT to stop in to see Chad and his crew. What a bunch of great guys who have an absolutely boundless love for music and all things connected to it. Once they know you're an audiophile, they'll make the time for you...

Jonathan Tinn from Playback Designs was telling me there would be some big DSD announcements this summer and fall and this is one of the biggest. Glad to see the Acoustic Sounds Super HiRez store is live on day 1 and that they have a nice variety of music in DSD. I have not looked into how they have been made and cannot attest to the sound or quality specifically, but I think if Chad Kassem is going this deep into DSD he would do it right for the most part.

One constant among all discussions I read on audiophile fora is the back-and-forth between older enthusiasts who have spent $800 on Pet Sounds and younger enthusiasts who have spent $0 pirating video game soundtracks. I think the best way to bridge that gap is to put everyone on a level playing field. If you would, please share some examples of albums you love that were first released before you were born. For my part, here are five to get us started. 1) Ahmad Jamal: Chamber Music of the New Jazz This is a phenomenal recording, showing really thoughtful playing by Jamal. I'm particularly fond of the rhythmic tapping and string plucking he employs t…

There are little tangents, like Headphone Journey. "Incredible tones and textures for spacing out, as well as recordings that reward particularly close listening." Seems to have a good variety of material.

Imagine fingerstyle guitar as influenced by Ali Akbar Khan/Ravi Shankar and Charles Ives/Bela Barotk as Bill Monroe and Mississippi John Hurt. Anyone else a fan? I'm particularly fond of John Fahey, Robbie Basho and James Blackshaw. I highly recommend Days Have Gone By, America, The Yellow Princess and Fare Forward Voyagers for Fahey, O True Believers by James Blackshaw, and most of Basho's early work, + Zarthus for something less guitar based. It's really beautiful stuff. An album from Blackshaw and a collaborator (forget his name, awesome lutenist) just came out recently, under the name Brethren of the Free Spirit. For those of you who don't frequent Head-Fi, someone posted that Oldies.com is having a fantasy warehouse clearance sale similar to that other one. Some of them are SACD's, but don't just search on the text "SACD", as not all of them are correctly identified. Ends Wednesday.

For some inexplicable reason, ~70% of my listening these days is Grateful Dead (or JGB). As background, I hated the Dead back in high school (went to a US private school, and found these WASPy deadheads quite annoying). At college, less annoying but couldn't care less about the roommates who were into the Dead. I've been to one and only Dead concert - Madison Square Garden in the '90s - more freaked out by the freaks than enjoying the show. Fast forward to today, I keep reaching for my GD CDs (or equivalent FLAC/ALAC). I've belatedly come to appreciate GD. I just spent $$$ ordering 9-CD Winterland '73 set, Terrapin Station 3-CD limited edition, Cow Palace, Dozin' At…

I am not sure any of you have heard of the small Russian band of two called Kauan before. The main force behind it is Anton Belov, who plays guitar, keyboards, and does vocals. The other member, Lubov Mushnikova, plays violin. Though the band comes from Russia, most of the lyrics are Finnish. To date, four albums have been released: Lumikuuro (2007), Tietäjän Laulu (2008), Aava tuulen maa (2009), and Kuu... (2011). The first two albums are considered a mix of folk, doom, and black metal. Having said this, the main sound consists of beautiful melodies driven by piano and guitar with a mix of both clean and back metal vocals. I am not really a fan of black metal,…

Hey folks, Since podcasting is all the rage (the kids love it ) I thought I'd start a thread about it. I don't listen to many Podcasts but I really love http://www.daveslounge.com/. It's downtempo/electronica/trip-hop stuff. A lot of music off the Podsafe music network and a lot of stuff from CDBaby (indie artists) So what's on your 'Pod?
