A pair of prodigious platters of plastic. Sorry. Couldn't help myself. An alliterative illiterate. It's two 180 gram 33.33 rpm disks - beautiful, dead flat, silent, excellent sounding pressings, in proper audiophile plastic-lined inner sleeves (Somehow, when an album costs the best part of fifty bucks, I think a Nitty Gritty sleeve is in order. Thank you very much.) The sound is head and shoulders above the 44.1 digital version - guitar timber, vocal, just about everything. This is the first Junkies album since way back, Caution Horses or Black Eyed Man maybe, where the vinyl has sounded that much better than the CD for me. There's a bit of tape pre-echo (print-t…

I'd like everyone to give me their impressions of my remaster of a great 80's song. I'll post the original and the remaster, but not say which is which. Please compare the two and tell me which one is better. Send big files the easy way. Files too large for email attachments? No problem! Send big files the easy way. See this article [NYTimes] for information on early 'pop' music. Much is available from UCSB. FOR a couple of months now my iPod has been stuck on Stella Mayhew's "I'm Looking for Something to Eat." It's a lurching little waltz-time pop tune, drawled over brass-band accompaniment. The lyric is hilarious, the lament of a gal on a diet who can't stop eating, and it climaxes with a glutton's soul cry: "I want some radishes and olives, speckled trout and cantaloupe and cauliflower/ Some mutton broth and deviled crabs and clams and Irish stew." I can't get it out of my head ? so far, it's my favorite record of 2006. As it happens, it's also my favorite record of 1909.…

Listen to the entire Dark Night of the Soul album over at NPR. "In addition to Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse (Mark Linkous), other artists appearing on Dark Night of the Soul include James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, David Lynch, and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils."

So, I figured my first post should be in the music forum, since that is what interests me the most, and I was disappointed that there is only one thread. Oh well, perhaps once we get more people in here, that'll change. So, what dark music (metal, goth, industrial, noise, experimental, etc.) have you been listening to lately? I'm really enjoying the new Android Lust release, Devour, Rise, and Take Flight. Technically in the goth/industrial vein, but not really sticking with any one genre. This is more of a ensemble sounding release than The Dividing -- the drums, in particular, sound more live than usual. It also goes off on some seriously weird tangents (which, to …

So I was talking with Colin on Sunday, and I decided we need to have a darkest desires thread, so feel free to pop in with whatever metal, black metal, goth, industrial, or experimental music you've been listening to lately, have questions about, or need recommendations on. This came about because Colin and I realized we had similar tastes in music, but I couldn't remember the names of all the bands that I liked, so I'd start by going over those again, mostly just as an exercise in memory more than anything else. The Gathering -- not really metal, although they used to be before Anneke joined them. Personally, I'm really happy with where they went, and sad that the…

I have decided that David Bowie is the next artist that I'm going to dive into after my past two dive-ins which were the far less famous Beggars Opera and Renaissance. Both of which were a while ago. Articulate for me, if you would be so willing, those of you who like a bit of Bowie, which of his CDs I shoudl begin my dive with. For an artist of his level of fame and influance I am basically, utterly blank listening slate, all I really know is Space Oddity and Starman. Thank you in advance.

On Thursday, “sometime between 1:23 and 1:38 p.m. Pacific time,” Mr. Lynch, the celebrated “Twin Peaks” creator and director of films like “Mulholland Drive,” will reintroduce davidlynch.com as a digital music store and “sensory experience.” There will be sound experiments from the past (some unreleased from his film and television projects) and new music. http://tinyurl.com/4j48hkc

So, I have a new favourite record store -- it's called Strangeland Records. It's near the intersection of Columbia Pike and Little River Turnpike in Northern Virginia. They specialize in all the music I like the most -- industrial, goth, electro, metal and goth -- the dark musics, as it were. And punk (I'm not that into punk, but they are). And they're having a sale starting Friday. I found the new Agalloch, Unexpect, And One, a limited Psyclone 9 and a whole bunch of others I hadn't planned on getting. Don't go in there expecting to find Katie Melua. Unless she's suddenly become a Suicide Girl.

How does the SQ and overall quality of the DCC Gold series compare to Mobile Fidelity? Does Steve Hoffman oversee the DCC line? I just found a new copy of Jackson Browne's "Late for the Sky" for $100 when the used were going for as much as $200. I don't think I've paid more than $25 for one cd in my life but to inaugurate my new Capitole this might be the CD I would pay such a price if...that sound is really that significant a difference? What's the general comparison between the two premium companies? Between a standard rebook and these gold standards? And as anyone heard or do you have "Late for the Sky?"

So, just a question for ya'll.. how many CDs do you have with pre-emphasis and what do you feel is the best way to handle playback of these CDs? In my case, they are mostly Japanese recordings. If you rip music off these discs, do you handle this in the software domain? If you're not ripping music, it seems like a lot of newer equipment doesn't handle this spec at all... In the DIY realm, what do you think of handling this in a passive fashion, much like an RIAA circuit, pros/cons?

A buddy of mine has been working with Winston Ma from FIM on a book about the "golden era" of Decca Records. During the last 18 months he has spent a good deal of time in the UK picking the minds of the folks who were involved with recording some of the most loved classical recordings of any era. Decca: Supreme Stereophonic Legacy was published and has been officially released. The 2 volume set includes 4 hi rez CD's. http://www.elusivedisc.com/Decca-Supreme-Stereophonic-Legacy-Ultra-HD-CD-Box-Set-4CD-Book/productinfo/FIMUHD088/

watch this: http://www.pbs.org/kcet/wiredscience/story/67-audio_files.html I saw this and, as an audiophile, it just made me sick. I wanted to grab that digital nazi by the neck and strangle him through my computer screen right then and there. The whole world is NOT moving to mp3 crap. I think cds are probably here to stay. I also hope LPs don't get phased out anytime soon. Audiophiles unite! All hail lossless audio and analog recordings!

I happen to like music that can be broadly categorized as "shoegazing" and "noise-pop." So if anyone else is a fan of such genres, and who's also in the DC/MD/VA area, there is a local music fest full of bands who make music in those genres: MySpace.com - DNA in the DNA Radio WMUC Radio 88.1 FM - 101 - Male - COLLEGE PARK, Maryland - www.myspace.com/dnainthedna I've seen a couple of these bands live before, and while they are by no means mind-blowing, they are pretty decent, IMO.

Many times I have wanted to ask someone to listen to a recording and compare a few notes, mostly around system "voicing" and dialing things in. So, we will see if there is interest to help. First request is Bill Evans "Waltz for Debbie" APJ 009 (vinyl). If you have a different format or mastering, then that could be interesting as well.

Who has a DVD-Audio player? And what type of music do you like? I recently went thru my collection and found multiple duplicates of some of my DVD-Audio discs. I intend on giving them away to some lucky Head-Case member/s. I?ll post a list and I?ll have to figure out how the lucky people will pay for the shipping (I?m not going to pay for giving stuff away). My one caveat is that I don?t want to give these away so that someone can sell them. So recipients are honor bound to NOT RESELL these discs. If I find out that any recipients don?t have a DVD-Audio player, I?ll Kick their ASS! If I find the discs being resold, I?ll kick your ASS! If you say anything about …
