So, a friend of mine came across an artist recently that has really grabbed my attention. I know it's a bit way off the beaten path, but I'm enjoying it so much I just had to pass it along. And lets face it, most music like this doesn't exactly discover itself! Emilie Autumn She's a classically trained violinist who specialized in boroque pieces. She pretty much abandoned her classical career by the age of 18. She started her own label, releasing one boroque solo-violin album, On A Day... before developing a sound she describes as "Victoriandustrial" and her look as "Punktorian." Both seem quite fitting. A little bit of harpsichord, a little bit of violin wit…

SXSW is happening next week (along with the beginning of the F1 season!) and considering how freakin many great sounds will be happening there, NPR has done us a fantastic service and given us a sampler of what to keep any ear open for. (Full disclosure, I haven't actually listened to this but I plan to soon) http://apps.npr.org/austin/

Short note to let you know that due to lack of resources, one of the largest Yes fan sites offering loads of bootleg recordings from Yes concerts, will go offline in July. They are hosting about 3TB of Yes music. Were you interested https://yessongs.nl/

One constant among all discussions I read on audiophile fora is the back-and-forth between older enthusiasts who have spent $800 on Pet Sounds and younger enthusiasts who have spent $0 pirating video game soundtracks. I think the best way to bridge that gap is to put everyone on a level playing field. If you would, please share some examples of albums you love that were first released before you were born. For my part, here are five to get us started. 1) Ahmad Jamal: Chamber Music of the New Jazz This is a phenomenal recording, showing really thoughtful playing by Jamal. I'm particularly fond of the rhythmic tapping and string plucking he employs t…

Back in the '90s, my favourite hi-fi store was selling high-end gear made by a small Australian company, named after its founder, Kostas Metaxas. At the time it was impressively better than famous brand names (in Australia at least) for what they were asking. They certainly were pretty hard-core about their designs, for example: Anyway, aside from that, I found they had put up some recording samples they'd made of jazz and classical, which, apart from a considerably amount of background hiss, are pretty good. Metaxas Audio Systems Hope you all enjoy them.

For me, I would love to see Tom Waits, Neil Young (not sure if these guys even tour anymore - with advanced notice, I would even consider flying to see the concert). Maybe Radiohead, Flaming Lips if they ever come to HK.

It was a nice experience. Overall, the music was not tear-inducing, but there were a few favourite sections of mine, including some arias by the tenor, who had a wonderful voice. The chorus was a bit piercing. I've always been sensitive to soprano ranges, so a deafening array of sopranos was bound to hurt my ears. Overall, it can get deafening, really quick. The position where you sit affects the music (expensive tickets, etc), and the performance you get may not be cherry picked, like a recording is. Often I find that live performances always somewhat fall below recordings, and probably for obvious reasons. This led me to think a bit about hi-fi and music. People a…

So I'm looking at buying the Out of the Blue CD, but there seem to be 2 main editions, the regular 17-track release and the 30th anniversary with 3 bonus tracks released in 2007. Which one should I get and also – what is your favorite ELO album and song?

I am a big fan of vinyl. I still have my first records that I purchased as a little kid in the early '70s and they are still in decent shape. I still buy a lot of used albums and several new ones. Here lately, my luck with new albums has been pretty bad. I bought John Prine's last record and it sounds good. I pre-ordered the reissue of John Prine's first album and it sounds awful. I have the cd and it sounds good. I recently bought Charlie Crockett's latest album. I knew that it should sound great because on the radio and on tital it sounds like it was recorded at Sun Records 60 years ago. The vinyl version sounds like it's being played on an old transistor radio in the n…

I know from posts in the Listening thread there are members that still subscribe to B&W's Society of Sound, but it's been many years since it's been discussed and a few since an album has been released I cared much about (to be fair that's coupled with the raise of streaming services). Anyway, my subscription is about to expire and curious if others are still excited about their 24-bit releases?

I've gotten hooked on Al Kooper's monthly article from the Morton Report. Kooper (Bob Dylan, Super Session, Blood Sweat and Tears etc) has always been a highly opinionated artist/producer and no matter how you feel about his personality, just playing on Electric Lady Land buys him a good bit of respect in my book. So, check it out. How I relate personally to the music list goes up and down a little from month to month, but I can't say that there's ever been one that didn't put a little fire in my heart. http://www.themortonreport.com/entertainment/music/new-music-for-old-people-braid-the-fray-ruthie-foster-owen-pallett-and-more/

Ya rly. I am both unsurprised and waiting for him to say "Nah, just playing." Of course, many IDM fans (a group of conspiracy theorists if there ever was one, ask them about Boards of Canada some time) have long suspected this to be true. The only artist (besides Massive Attack) that Burial has collaborated with is Four Tet.

Who's going to support their local record store on "Record Store Day"? http://www.recordstoreday.com/Home It looks like there will be a lot of new releases and exclusives sold on Record Store Day (RSD). And some stores will have quite a few special events. Amoeba in Hollywood is giving away 250 wristbands to see Smashing Pumpkins perform on RSD if you preorder their boxset. Slash will be signing his new album. Salzer's in Ventura will be having some bands play and Coheed & Cambria will be doing a signing. Looks like quite a bit of good fun.

Thought I'd start this thread, seeing as I'm listening to Sky Cries Mary right now. Check 'em out. Well, can't have this thread without mentioning Porcupine Tree, so I'll mention them: Porcupine Tree -- so there, I mentioned them. If you like this type of music and you haven't heard them, you should at least check them out. No, seriously, they've recently been remastering a lot of their back catalog, and the impossible to get Lightbulb Sun should be coming up soon. Stars Die (the compilation) is a good place to start. Warning: multiple versions of practically all their albums exist, so do your homework first -- decide, for example, beforehand, whether or not …

What pieces by Bach do you consider to require exceptional individual virtuosity? I'm more referring to technical prowess than interpretation, etc. Opinions?

Just a heads up,.. There's a 15% discount code (on that other site) for the Rolling Stones hi rez downloads that HD Tracks are selling. I guess I could just paste it here but somehow that doesn't seem right? Whatever,.. all you have to do is visit that site and copy and paste it to the "discount code" box when you're checking out. If you're like me, I'm just grabbing the "Through the Past..." and waiting for "Let it Bleed" and hopefully "Sticky Fingers" latter on. I haven't got anything but the original vinyl of this stuff so don't ask me to do comparisons! If I can't hear a difference without A/Bing it,.. it isn't significant in my book.
