I don't know whether I'm just out of touch and ignorant about Google's practices or whether our main IT guy just wants to give us a hard time by refusing to install Google Analyics and comparing Google to the Stasi. He wants to an open source thing called Piwik instead, which seems quite powerful and is actually more tweakable, but doesn't have Google Analytics's neat Adwords integration. I mean what could Google possibly want to do with our website data anyways (other than aggregating it for analysis purposes and for selling me AdWords) and they have thick privacy policy to boot. What do you think?

So I get home from CanJam, and my macbook is doing something weird. I'm not sure I can describe this, it's like when a picture is too big and you have to scroll on a webpage to read across, except its the desktop, and all I'm doing it touching the pad. It moves, and the tool bars on the top and bottom no longer fit the screen. Also, no matter what I have up (like this forum) the whole page moves in the direction my finger goes when I touch the pad. It's making me crazy, and I can figure out how to make it stop. Kitty took a little walk across the keyboard this afternoon. I don't know if he messed with anything or not. Anyway, any help appreciated.

My dad is in need for a simple back-up solution and a wireless base station. I only found the time capsule as an all-in-one solution. Is really Apple the only producer of such a box? He uses windows (on a Thinkpad (r -series?)), anyone knows if the time capsule will work properly as both a wireless switch and a backup solution?

so i'm moving into an apartment next year that offers free internet as part of their glorious deal. this is nice, but means that i can't download shit or share massive amounts of information between my roommates and such for fear of them shutting off our internet. so i decided to use my old powerbook g4 as a server, plug in x number of external hard drives, and enable global file share on that bad boy so that everyone in the network can use it. here's my question. since the new airport express doesn't have gigabit ethernet, i'm wondering if i can simply link my powerbook and an airport extreme together with an ethernet cable, and create a wireless hub without having th…

Is there any way I can remote view my dad's computer desktop? I'm in Nashville, he's in Tulsa. Both are cable modems and OSX. He's not computer literate so everytime I try to troubleshoot he gets confuses as to what's the desktop vs. whatever. If I could see and possibly control it that would help a bunch. Hopefully something free as opposed to buying another piece of software.

Hi all, I have recently been optimizing my laptop for better performance. At the onset, I reinstalled Windows (Vista Business 32bit) sans bloatware using two partitions, planning to put the OS and programs on the C:/ partition and all data on the D:/ partition. I noticed that I only had the option for giving the C:/ partition 60% of my 160GB drive. I figured this must have been necessary, but this turned out to be far from the case. The partition is not even half full, and I don't plan to install too many new programs in the future, maybe 5-10GB more at the most, so I don't need 40GB of free space. I wanted to reduce the drive in size by about 25% and give this s…

For a variety of reasons, I'd really like to pick one of these up. Actually two. Optical audio out, music streaming, wireless internet, etc. I also hope to have a mac somewhere down the road. I know these are Mac + PC compatible, but what I haven't seen answered is whether or not it can be installed from a PC, without ever going through a Mac at all. Is it PC-compatible in a PC-only scenario? I know it can be used to extend the range of a wireless network, but the wireless in my house is an ancient Linksys turd; I'd like to use the airports as THE wireless network. (and in a pc-only environment until I get my Mac)

How secure are Google Docs and Google Apps? We're looking into document sharing here at my day job and someone mentioned google docs. Thing is, these are fairly sensitive documents with confidential information. Is this secure enough or no. Anyone else's company share docs this way?

Ok, so the game that I spent a good part of my formative years playing has been re-released for the Mac and I'm dying to try it again. So that leaves me in the somewhat awkward position of basically not wanting to spend much in the way of $$ on this computer. It certainly doesn't need to be much, specs are as follows: Minimum Specs - Mac OS 10.3.9 - G3 processor - 500 mhz - 128MB of RAM - 106MB of free hard drive space - Turn all special effects off to run at 15 frames per second Recommended Specs - G4 processor - 1.0 ghz - 256MB of RAM - 100MB of free hard drive space So what's the cheapest thing to look for that I can simply plug in in place of my exi…

Ok, so even after I originally said it was stupid, I've been considering the Air recently. I was looking on the Apple Store, and Time Capsule sounds cool, and as I understand it, is also a wireless router? And it has a USB port? It says on their website that you can hookup a USB printer to it. What about a usb optical drive? If you can hook up a USB optical drive, is anyone aware of any wireless printers? If you can't, are there wireless or bluetooth optical drives? If I switch to the Air, I'll be getting rid of my desktop, so this is important. Anyone have experience with bluetooth keyboards and mice? Oh, and can you also partition part of the Time Capsule…

So I've been having problems with my wireless for a month now. The wireless card decides to turn itself off at random times, usually once every two days or so, and when I try to turn it back on, it does nothing. So I try the thinkvantage wireless thing and it says its still on when its obviously off. I tried uninstalling the Thinkvantage wireless manager, fooled around with the power settings of the wireless card and logging in and out, but the only thing that works is restarting the computer. Any recommendations thats not reformatting the comp, buy a mac or get linux?

Right now I use E6420 2.13GHZ OC'd to 3.4GHZ XFX GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 4x1GB Corsair C4 (comb-styled heatsink) ram. Chasis: Antec P182SE Stock cooling for everything I guess.. Windows XP 32-bit My main concern is that my videocard is very hot, so I always have to keep the 2 fans on my case on HIGH mode, which makes it very loud. Is there any way I can fix this? I don't care about the cost as long as it isn't outrageous.. so I'm willing to change to watercooling, heat-sinks, etc if it makes a significant difference. Thank you for your time I hope I will be able to quietly listen to music on my desktop one day.. Nenso

My Asus Eee PC arrived yesterday. This is my first post from it. Impressions so far are ok. It's tiny. The keyboard is tiny. Probably easier to use for a "hunt & peck" typist like me. I'm still using the Linux based OS it comes with, but on Monday when I have access to a USB DVD drive will probably load XP. I'll do some pics later to give an idea of this little thing. For now it's a cool toy, I'll just have t see how much I use it.

alright, this is mostly a question for mac users, but if you windows users got some advice, i'd love to hear it. anyway, i have a bunch of tv shows downloaded on my external hdd (scrubs, house, lost, bsg, etc.) and my roommate wants to watch them on his computer in the other room sometime. i have a macbook and he has a macbook pro, and we're both running leopard with file sharing on. i'm using an 802.11g network and since about a month ago, the video streaming worked perfectly fine. my roommate could watch any and all shows that he wanted by simply connecting to my computer via the shared network. recently, however, the video streams have basically gone to shit. he …

Apple released the new updated MacBook Pro and MacBook models today. Only 30 days after I bought my MacBook, too. Stupid Apple not going by their usual update/upgrade schedule.

I've had sp1 running on my laptop (vista home premium 64-bit) and my desktop (vista ultimate 64-bit) since Saturday. The install didn't take all that long for a service pack especially one this large and it worked flawlessly. The big problems I'd had with vista the "calculating time remaining" bug and the slow file copy bug have been completely fixed. The whole OS seems to be faster and more responsive over all. I've seen some reports of boot times increasing post-sp1 vs pre-sp1 but if it is any longer it hasn't been noticeable to me.

It seems there are a lot of sysadmins here. Our company recently got Websense, which blocks a lot of what we can see on the web. Is it also logging my posts to HC? Anything else I should know about it?

Things to do with websphere application server 6.1 : and Sorry for this. I'm just a little frustrated because I can't get the sucker to setup a jmx connection, which works fine in Jboss (and Websphere community edition). Guess this is what you get for paying big money for software. Feels better now. Thanks.

I've been using VitaminSEE with my iMac, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestion for a good image viewer/browser for Mac? I really miss ACDSee I used to use on my PC, but they don't make the program for OS X.
