  2. I hate people. I should probably live where there aren’t people.

  3. Having lived in Southern California and experienced five major fires, fires where I can actually see the flames on the hillside I can tell you from first hand experience that brush clearing and fire breaks do help in minimizing the fire damage. I can only speak from first hand experience where I have seen the fires burn brush all the way up to the cleared areas and then stop. These observations and opinions are shared by some friends who are LA City and County fire fighters and fire Captains whose job it is to fight these fires. My opinions are based on first hand experience not information gleaned from the internet. There is no need to be rude to Jose or Rob.

  5. The millennials/zoomers are now in a position where a college degree is more like a high school degree was 40 years ago. Employers want a degree for even entry level stuff that is brain dead work. And they pay crap. If you don't get specialized, good luck. And with Asian and India degree mills working overtime, guys with master's degrees show up at job interviews all the time. About 10 minutes into the interview you wonder how the guy tied his own shoes.Yes, I'm in my 60's. Thank god my kids have it together.

  6. Well our kids were born in 1986 and 1989, so definitely not boomers (I'm a boomer). Rob and Helen own their own house. And Liz and Oscar (the Australians) have saved a monster deposit by hard graft and will be buying in the next 6 months. Rob works as a project manager in major audio visual installations. His latest was the Samsung King's Cross https://www.samsung.com/uk/explore/kings-cross/ AV systems, the most complex bit being this, 4 metre wide curved screen LED display with 0.8mm pixel pitch. The LED modules weigh a ton in total, and each networked module has got 6-axis microadjustment to ensure minimal error in module position. Helen works in advanced image analysis for defence. Liz now works mainly in costume and theatre installation design with some acting Oscar runs a 15-man arborist company clearing power lines from tree problems (gum trees grow real fast) So any idea that non-boomers have got a bum deal is certainly not the case with our offspring.

  8. I like those, and don't mind the whole thing as an acoustical art installation. But it is a shitty amplifier being sold for a lot of money.

  9. Thanks everyone. I've been a bit of a Head Case dead beat. Birthday was great, thanks, and the family is doing well... Penelope turned 6 yesterday and Piper is 2. Kitty-Fi update, we lost Zoë this summer at almost 17, and recently picked up a bonded pair of 7 month old Siamese mix kitties. So things are largely good on the balance. Don't mind Piper's cast... She's fine! Nutella (L, female), and Marshmallow (R, male)

  10. I agree with you Jose. The current practice in the US is to utilize controlled burns. They are smaller and lower temperature fires, that mimic the temporal fire ecology of these forests. Do they do a good job with that mimicking? That is up for debate. But it is certainly better than the previous preservationist policy of total fire suppression. But then again, what the fuck do I know?

  13. If one is under 30 and has an education that will actually lead to gainful employment, then one also has (A) student loans the size of Turkmenistan's GDP, (B) intellectual gifts earning a giant scholarship, or (C) rich AF parents. This is to say nothing of the cost of housing, transportation (the nest major economic bubble/bust is auto loans, you can quote me on this), energy, etc. As for an economic recession, Ol' Cheeto Dust is getting that warmed up as we speak. The Fed just lowered interest rates while the economy is still "booming" (generally the opposite of that is the rule) and the FDIC voted to ease regulations (also know as protections) put in place post-2008. The excrement is going to hit the ventilator, the only question is at what speed are the blades turning. Also, to be clear, I'm a Gen Xer. I expect the world to burn, and it has yet to disappoint me. ...and now some pictures: Abandoned motel in Arizona. Painted Hills, Oregon. Tuscany hills, Italy.

  14. I didn't know Matt personally, some e-messaging back on H-F in the nicer times. But I always get sad when I see the outpouring here....and the fact he would have only been fucking 37 years old today.... Happy Birthday Matt.....

  15. Proper funding is mandatory for those DIY projects. Not mentioning killing yourselves with fake sand, along with troubleshooting made impossible not knowing who's who. Saving a few ten or hundred bucks is bullsh*t, common, you are going to play those with top dollar headphones, and they are designed to last decades. Quality remains, prices forgets. And some savings are costly.

  19. I also agree with you, Jose. That is an ignorant policy and it's proving itself out. "Don't live in areas where forest fires happen" is about the most ignorant fucking statement.

  24. Just finished eating a couple of Sirloins done on the Weber. Did a simple salt, pepper and garlic rub and then a Rosemary butter baste using Rosemary sprigs to do the basting. More importantly, this was the initial run for my new MEATER Block. True wireless meat probes with a nice phone app. I was cooking these to a non HC medium rare (15 year old taste buds) and it came out absolutely perfect. No guess work. Very pleased. I did have to wait a fucking Long time as it was bought on Kickstarter. They have a web site now so you should not have to wait a year and a half for yours.

  25. Today we have brought clothes and food to displaced people. It seems that after five days, the fire is "stabilized" but not controlled. The 5 seaplanes and 11 helicopters do not stop operating from dawn until night. Sentinel-3 image from space. You can see three fires. Nasa image
