  1. Yesterday's weather here in scenic Western MA was absolutely perfect, so naturally I didn't get out of the house for the entire day. Today was gloomy and overcast, but with no actual rain. I spent some time dragging down the hill the last of the brush that I'd previously cut down: The pile is actually significantly bigger than this photo lets on. I added a bunch more after I took it, and I couldn't get all of it in frame without stepping in to a large patch of prickers. After my "RL drag and drop" operation, I began hacking away at the growth on the east side of my lower driveway. It's been cheerfully trying to take over ...goddamn everything. I didn't even both with my phone and music today because I just could not be arsed to futz with the wires. Instead I had John Cage's 4'33 on repeat. I continue to be old, fat (though slightly less so, I'm down 20 pounds since February) and marginally less out of shape.

  2. Last of my original order of PC parts showed up today, so I set about getting everything installed in the new case (and moved my drives and GPU over from the old one). I did have a brief period of concern because it took a while for the motherboard to do it's initial calibration to the hardware before booting up the first time I turned it on, but miraculously everything worked perfectly fine after that. Now windows is wayyy more responsive and I can finally retire the old i5-2500k. Just gotta wait on the new GPU to arrive to truly complete the build.

  3. Pretty cool video of a couple of endurance cyclists doing a 467km stage from the 1903 Tour de France on near period bikes. https://www.globalcyclingnetwork.com/video/can-we-ride-and-survive-a-stage-of-the-1903-tour-de-france

  4. More goodies showed up last night but with some bad news. The PSU main PCB came in 1.6mm/3oz copper instead of 2mm/3oz copper specification. There was a miscommunication that neither I or PCBnet caught until now - the order submitted specified 2mm thickness an 3oz copper but the quote was for 0.62' and 3oz copper and manufactured accordingly. I noticed this discrepancy when I took the PCBs from their wrapping to take some photos. The mini T2 boards are 2mm/3oz copper as ordered. All the PCBs look great with a nice heavy feel to them and are very good quality as can be expected from PCBnet. I have contacted PCBnet to see what can be done to resolve the issue.

  6. That was awesome. And apart from dirt roads back in 1903, you had to fix your bike if you had a mechanical. If you had assistance you were given a time penalty. There was a famous incident while descending the col de Tourmalet, recounted here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugène_Christophe when he walked 10km down the descent when his forks broke, found a forge, and set about brazing his bike back together. But he had the blacksmith's son pump the bellows. In spite of losing a massive amount of time, he was given a 10 minute penalty because he had assistance from having the forge pumped. He still finished in 7th place.

  11. The feature I enjoy most is “track radio” as a way of discovering similar new music. It doesn’t work as well for classic rock, as they tend to lump all classic rock together, and if the music is too new, it tends not to exist, but it’s almost always worth it to me to check.

  12. Try those modern components and reduce high voltages to +/-400V (I’ve tried all except KSC1008 and J112). Old Modern 2SA1468 KSA1156 2SK216 KSC2690A 2SJ79 KSA1220A 2SC3381 KSC1008 2SK246 J112 2SK3675 FJPF2145 Mouser wants $51,51.
