  1. Are we going to just ignore that Steve got his entrance AND EXIT wounds cleaned up, got back to work and finished the job? That's pretty badass

  2. The important thing is the doors are fine.

  3. When I build raised panel doors that are going to be painted (by the customer), I like to paint the edges of the panels before securing them in the frame. Otherwise when those panels shrink up a little bit in winter, you'll see some tiny edges of bare wood. This way the panels can expand and contract inside the frames without that happening. But it's all one solid oak panel.

  8. The safety resistors are a good idea even without the CCS mod. The easiest place to put them is at the PCB board - just de-solder the wire going to the output socket at the PCB and interpose the safety resistor between the PCB hole and the wire. Agree with Pars and Fitz comments re electrolytic caps. Replacing 100 uf caps with 330 uf caps should be fine as long as they physically fit - that includes the lead spacing, since the power supply caps are right up against the PCB so the lead spacing has to be the same. The brand shouldn't make a significant difference in sound unless they are defective.

  9. My experience with "audio grade" electrolytic capacitors is they've been intended for circuits where they're directly in the signal path as coupling capactiors, which is avoided in the first place with a good design.

  10. I cannot really have a priority yet as I have no idea what I am doing. I still do not know 99% of what the weird knobs on all the UA vintage equipment even does. The Warm does work on a desktop arm.

  11. OK, HC hive, I am trying to figure something out with these... The hdmi input on these new versions sounds like it could basically be the center of my TV/apple TV/oppo setup, and can take all the hifi downstairs away from the fam and have a pretty clean setup for our general family purposes of cartoons, netflix, and movies. Currently, we basically stream virtually everything from our Apple TV (we cut cable a while back), which feeds the hdmi input of my oppo 103 (it does that video processor upscaling thingy), and that feeds hdmi to the panny plasma. I've got the oppo feeding my wyred4sound dac/pre thingy which then feeds the rest of the hifi. My first thought is that I can used the dual hdmi outputs of the oppo, with hdmi 1 sending video to the panny, and hdmi 2 sending audio into the new KEFs. However, the KEF connectivity guide says that the hdmi input doesn't support hdmi audio, but can handle two channel PCM. The hdmi label is "TO TV", so I'm wondering if its meant to be connected to the hdmi arc input from a TV, and not necessarily in the manner that I'm proposing above. I could ask a local KEF dealer but I don't have much faith that they would know what I'm talking about. Please send halp.

  13. Had a Vodavi phone system at work that one of the station ports didn't work. Normally I wouldn't even bother trying a repair on one of these and just replace the unit, but lacking any working ones on the shelf, I decided to have a go at it... and somehow actually managed to fix it. 😲 Random picture of one off the internet for reference: I had to replace one of those little blue transformers, the thermistor beside it, and some smd components on the back of the board, with ones I salvaged off a different broken unit. It took a few passes to track down everything that was damaged, but now it works as it should. Yay.

  14. Pretty lackluster actual birthday day. Taught my genetics lecture at 8:15, Intro. Research Stats. at 9:45, Zoom office hour 11:00, Research Stats. Lab at noon then stupid paperwork shit until I left work 4:00. Rested for about a half hour at home and then took Peter to soccer practice. The birthday weekend was pretty good. On Friday our new family room couch was delivered and on Saturday, the garage refrigerator was delivered. So all in all a pretty good birthday, and as Al pointed out, much better than the alternative. Thanks for all the good wishes.

  15. Got back on the plane after about three hours. Sat longer than expected and then they said there was a new problem being worked on. Apparently that is now fixed and we are leaving again. Soon. Hopefully. All the while in an N95 mask, which makes everything better, of course.

  16. Delta doesn't fill middle seats so most rows had two people in them, and then there were a few empty rows around the wing exit rows. I had a full row to myself after moving up one row. I don't think the bars are open here...

  17. I'm taking my first airline flight since early March, and my airline luck has picked up where it left off. We took off almost right on time even though the flight crew was late to arrive. After flying for a few minutes the captain came on to say that the cabin could not be pressurized properly so we had to turn around. Now back on the ground and not sure if or when we can get going again. My layover is only 90 min and the next/last flight of the day to my destination is five hours later. Fucking airlines are still fucking up.

  19. I Bogart-ed Jude's pair at the SF meet for an extended listening session on my own rig and I agree with most of what Tyll had to say. It was noisy and I don't claim to have nearly as experienced a set of ears, but I could tell right away that they are an extremely technically competent headphone. I'm hoping to get a pair for an audition in the months to come. My only immediate issue was that the soundstage/imaging seemed lacking next to my HD800S, which is something Tyll noticed as well. As a former 009/KGSS-HV owner, I don't think the Utopia is going to convert anyone away from the Church of stats.

  21. I'm working on making some raised panel doors. My landlord has a rental house somewhere north of Sacramento, and I guess he had some tenants that managed to break 5 solid oak cabinet doors. He couldn't find anyone who could make replacements in any sort of timely manner, when he asked me if I could make cabinet doors? Silly man! Anyway, I was putting the last frame together with glue and pocket screws, when the bit jumped out of the screw and decided to go all the way through my hand. I was applying pressure because of the hard oak. Maybe just a little too much! Luckily Al's cleaning woman, Toni was there. She cleaned the entry and exit wounds and bandaged me up. I was able to get right back to it. Just goes to show you that any tool can be dangerous in the hands of an idiot. Luckily it was the fleshy part, under the thumb.

  22. https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/police-ukraine-investigate-death-us-embassy-employee-73358211 Wife of a colleague in neighboring Ukraine passed away, today. Authorities are simultaneously investigating murder and accidental death due to a collision with a train. Either is heartbreaking. State is a big organization, and anytime someone connected to the embassy dies it makes the news. I did not know the woman who passed or her family, but she had four children. Terrible news.
