It's currently 0F here, and didn't get above 6F today, with windchills way into the negatives. The dog pretty much told me to fuck off while walking him this morning.6 points

Can't tell if you're justifying stealing the design or getting mad that you got exposed, maybe it's both4 points

I had a dream last night that I met James Hoffman at Square Mile, which for some reason was in an old broken down cabin. I left with coffee, but there wasn’t any under my pillow when I woke up. I think I might be watching too much coffee YouTube!2 points

It never crested -1 (C) here. On the bright side, nothing melted and refroze into new black ice, so only old black ice that did not sublimate remained. I didn't slip once.1 point

I referenced this nearly 30 year old usenet post today and of course exactly no one knew what I was talking about.1 point

Thanks @audiostar! Here's a sneak peak preview of the mechanical design. This is the case that I ordered... not at all cheap, but made by a small company in Germany: https://19zoll.com/en/products/aluminum-cases/19-heatsink-enclosure-series-dsk/ And this will be the inside - Neutrik HP jack and RCAs. Volume pot in the middle. Power via a rotary switch a the rear with a long connecting rod to the front. The toroidal transformer is 50VA and has 2x 22V output windings - that should do for the 21V outputs of the GRLVs.1 point

A good summation of the state of headphones over the last five plus years. A gluttony of riches. And endgame for everyone.1 point

I think Bob was funnier than he often got credit for because a lot of his work was on the softer side of things. In the end what is most terrible to me (so far anyway) is him passing unexpectedly at 65. My comment to my wife was that I’m closer to that age than I am 21 and 21 doesn’t feel all that long ago.1 point

I do not take as many photos as I use to at racing events, but this caught my eye and I would be remiss not sharing. At last October's Texas Mile I had the pleasure of drooling over this Koenigsegg Regera. Truly an engineering feat....and...it comes with its own tuner (a breathing one with a charming accent...). The owner appeared disappointed with his speeds and left before the wind shifted to our benefit but we did get to see it make a few passes. HS1 point

Today's adventure entails mortising 22 door blanks to fit in existing door frames. First I need to cut the blanks to proper width, as the old frames are about 1/4" smaller than the new blanks. Then I use my lockset mortising jig to drill out for the knobs. Then I use my hing mortising jig to router away the hinge inset. The self centering, spring loaded drill bit makes quick work of attaching the hinges.1 point

I've been listening to a lot of Steve Roach recently, particularly his 2003 album Life Sequence. Steve is an insanely prolific artist and I will not live to get through his entire catalog. Generally I prefer his late 90s/early 00s works. I haven't kept up with what he's been doing for the last 15 years. As I said, he cranks out the albums, his tracks tend to run long (it is ambient, after all) and it takes me time to digest long form music. I keep coming back to this song in particular: There is a live version from 2002 (before the album came out) on YT, but I find that version to be less clear and fully formed. This studio version, OTOH, is quite a corker.1 point

Steve, just saying, I had a really excellent shawarma at Splitrock in Fairfax while drinking beer with Al today and highly recommend you direct $12 of your stimmy windfall that way. Get the lamb.1 point

It's alive 😊 How does it sound? Sounds great - to my ears... whatever thats worth! Seriously: after a short listening session, I am very pleased! Dead silence with no sound input and a very clear sound reproduction. In my opinion the HD-800 are very good in emphasizing any shortcomings in recordings or audio gear for that matter. Is it better or worse than others? I can't really judge. It is what it is and I am having fun during the process of building it - that's the main goal of the project! I will be performing harmonic distortion measurements as soon as I have the PSUs built. That will be the next step! Probably a Goldenreference variant. @kozard happy to share details - wasn't aware that it's of interest: three tools involved here: first is a 0.1mm V-shaped carbide engraving bit. Dirt cheap on eBay. That's for milling the isolation traces at a depth of 0.05mm. I used the same setting for the surround cutout. Only for marking, did the actual cutout with a hacksaw and a file. Then I used a 2mm endmill for clearing out the isolation areas around the 230V traces. Finally I drilled all holes with 0.6mm carbide twist drill. Didn't bother with tool changes for the different hole sizes. Did the ones that needed bigger holes later on manually. Thats really all the magic. I can maybe document the whole process in detail in the future if there is demand?1 point

By the way... I have been made aware of that the mini T2 is marketed by a company unknown to me. They want $ 7,000 for it. It is an example of a villain's business model.0 points

I talked to a long time friend who had a stroke in early 2021. I cried. I wished him a 2022 that was on an upward slope. He replied that he was in a wheelchair. I said “I know!” I thought he was gonna die, and I’m very glad I was wrong.0 points
