Clifford Brown, Trumpeter Whose Brief Life Left a Lasting Mark He was one of the most talked-about jazz musicians in the 1950s. After he died in a car accident at 25, his influence grew. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/12/obituaries/clifford-brown-overlooked.html?unlocked_article_code=1.MVA.U-8R.KeqzVnsWHn7_&smid=nytcore-ios-share (gift article)3 points

Some quick googling suggests that if you contact Niche, they'll sell you a motor that six months or so ago would only run you ~$70+ import fees (~$50 at the time). Might be worth a shot? If you decide to move on, let me know. I'd like to have a go at fixing it.2 points

Thank you, n-maher! I did see where a gent sent one in to be repaired by Niche. @luvdunhill I did not clean mine frequently, but it is worth going in there every now and again IMHO. Very easy to do and there's a few vids out if you like having a reference. HS1 point

Since I just got these, might be time to talk about possibly the rarest stuff Stax ever made. Let me introduce the SRM-Monitor Mk2 and the SR-Lambda Pro New: I've only seen a couple of these for sale over the years so very rare indeed. The headphones are basically the modern version of the Lambda Pro's but not the Spirit/Pro Classic, made later than that. The SRM-Monitor has been called the Mk2 but the changes are mostly to the chassis. Inside there is still a SRM-1 Mk2 and the ED-1 but with different parts. They are all Pro bias only and notice the extra output on the back. The volume knob is also similar to the SRM-T1S/W knob and not the SRM-1 Mk2 unit found of the original Monitors. I have no idea when these were made but I've heard late 90's and for special customers which wanted to replace their older Lambda Pro sets and SRM-Monitors. With these here the Lambda collection is almost complete...1 point

I've mentioned Martin Sturtzer on H-C many times over the years. He is a German ambient artist who lives in Wuppertal, Germany (home to the coolest tramway in the world.) He has an impressive synth collection and the single best behaved synth kitty I have seen in my life. He is not happy. Also, Spotify sucks balls.1 point

As a follow up. We did have a great talk. He was completely unaware of how offensive I took it. He also quoted me back to me, when I told him that gay men love gay jokes more than anyone. After I explained my experience with that hellish disease he actually started tearing up and apologized profusely. He really had no idea. He even gave me a hug, which cemented that he didn't mean to offend me in any way. I'm too sensitive about that subject, I'm certain. But all is well.1 point

Newb question: I just bought 10 lbs. of coffee (enough to last me a year). What's the best way to store it? Hermetically sealed, frozen, or other?1 point

Well, after 6 years my Niche Zero appears to be giving up the ghost. The electric motor got hung up grinding 20 grams of espresso beans. I took it apart, cleaned it well and reassembled...same thing. I tried pour over beans just for grind and it's the same...the motor appears to have weakened to the point it needs to be replaced. I prefer to have one grinder that does both my regular (machine / pour over) and espresso beans. Any recommendations for a high quality grinder...preferably of the low maintenance variety like the Niche has been. Thanks! HS0 points
