  1. Thanks for the birthday wishes. Nothing special yesterday, taught my classes, had dinner at Smashburger with Peter, took him to his SAT prep class then home for the evening. Still a bit worried about this present though

  3. Alright, I'll take the plunge on the trial. I'm not really unhappy with Tidal, but I worry about their ability to survive with (IIRC) around 5mm subscribers when Amazon, Apple and Spotify all have many multiples of that. I'll check back in with thoughts after some use.

  4. Man that takes me back. Think I first read "A Wizard of Earthsea" in 1980 or so. I was going through a very regrettable Westerns phase (Louis L' Amour etc.) at the time and it was what really drew me into Fantasy.

  7. Heh. Thanks to talking to @TMoney last night when I should have been asleep, I got the audiobook of Why We Sleep. Gonna give it a spin at work while I'm up at this un-Satanly hour. 4:30 is too bloody early for this historic night owl.

  8. Love Ursula K. Le Guin. Earthsea is great. I especially recommend "The Left Hand of Darkness".

  9. I've been starting to dig in to Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea books. There is something about her prose that I really enjoy reading. It is apparent right off the bat that she is an extremely talented writer.

  10. House of 1,000 Corpses was the first movie Zoe ever went to in theatres (at 6 months old.) I wound up watching that movie 50-100 times, and definitely appreciated the Captain. RIP, Sid.

  11. First impressions of the new watch are very positive vs. the 3rd gen one I had been using up until I broke it over the 4th of July weekend. The always-on display is a game changer for the watch and was badly needed. Not having to do the "apple watch flip" with the wrist every time you want to check the time is a godsend. Also, won't be true for everybody but I really like the lighter weight of the base aluminum watch. There are some people who like a more substantial watch on their wrist but I prefer something I barely notice. This fits the bill. The base aluminum model is noticeably lighter than the Stainless or Edition models. Yes, it feels cheaper as a result. At least for me comfort is paramount.

  13. I am absolutely the opposite. I had to read the Iliad in high school (30 years ago). I got it on tapes and listened to it on high speed and I think it's the only book from that year I remember at all.

  14. It's a compromise to be sure, but driving to and from work is one of the few times during the day when I'm alone and can consume something like an audiobook. No option to read during that period and very little time to actually read.

  15. You'd think men would have figured out the beauty industry drives women crazy and learn from their example – it amplifies, reinforces, and preys on their insecurities. Nearly finished this one: Hitch-22 by Christopher Hitchens
