  4. A very happy birthday to you, Justin. May all your amps be equal parts over-complicated and profitable.

  5. I demo'd Holo May and Spring KTEs with a two-box streamer made by my country's Holo distributor. I did not get to do proper A/B testing, but I heard almost none or no difference compared my Node and RME DAC. With the May, definitely a difference, but nowhere near the price difference--I left the demo feeling much much more confident about my setup as-is. Disclosures: I have almost zero experience, zero engineering or audio knowledge, and my opinions should not be taken without salt. My setup (Node, RME, balanced Mogami interconnects, a powerstrip with Faraday cage enclosures, and a Carbon) may or may not induce cackles--they are welcome if they are wrapping for advice. And...I use ALL the tinkering features the RME provides, and I get a sound that is pretty close to what I imagine is my hearing ceiling. I use a Soren Brix-build Carbon. I was looking at the Chord Dave and TT2 as well...until I stumbled upon the thread here about Chord Dave...

  8. Congrats It's been a long while since I've had any lollipops on my endmills. I just looked at some of my typical settings. I'm using 1/8" bits, < .039" (.99mm) depth of cut with a speed of 15" (381mm) / minute for most general cutting. For a 2mm bit with longer cuts I might dial back the depth to .03" (.75mm) or possibly a bit less (not a typical operation for me). I run the spindle at 14400 RPM for most milling operations. Drilling and thread milling is slower (5K - 12K RPM). YMMV I have a mister with air, but I typically only use air. I'm using these carbide single flute upcut bits: Kyocera - 1/8" Single Flute Kyocera - 2mm Single Flute Onsrud - 1/4" Single Flute They say for plastics, but someone had recommended them to me years ago and I haven't had issues since. Good luck!

  12. red actually. was looking at the green egg but the kamodo has an infinitely better heavy duty spring loaded hinge that holds the top in any position. total weight of this beast is close to 400 lbs. not easy to move. but unlike the weber which topped out at about 450F, this easily gets to 900F. tonight, tomahawk steak.

  15. 3600€ for the DAC and the PSU at this place, the local dealer offers a bit of a discount on this, maybe with decent trade-in as well (DS-10 plus version costs a bit more, only differs regarding inputs). The Lumin X1 cost is 13500€ and I didn't impress me in a similar manner, maybe I will revisit that one day. If I look at vintage DACs I need to sort out USB, no streaming options, no preamp functionality, etc. etc. Time is money and I'm not sure if it is worth trading in one for the other, if there is one that seems to give me what I want. But yes DACses nowadays seem all over the place as well as prices for audio gear. For instance, my sub-200€ SR-X Mk3 normal bias that is classified as "entry-level" takes full benefit of this DAC. Update: found a minty one locally, negotiations are currently standing at 2370€ for the DS-10 DAC with the PSU-10 EVO. A little tempting...

  16. A few months after I tried the Lumin X1 (maybe not in optimal circumstances), the Gold Note DS-10 + PSU-10 EVO gets a two thumbs-up from me. I would love to know if there is anything better from the R2R camp for this price (or this level of sound quality for cheaper), but this unit sounds amazing with all my Stax headphones. Excellent versatility and build quality as well, changing settings that influence the sound could be interesting, but I didn't feel that was necessary. I don't like paying for something that I don't use, which are the internal PSU and even the headphone amp (which is quite powerful and supposed to be very good as well). Not portable like the Lavry, not that happy about giving up crossfeed, and there was this blinking blue LED at the rear that was probably tied to some wifi setting or something which I had to cover. Otherwise highly recommended. (like all reviews say, but they generally say the same about pretty much everything...) Well done, Italy.

  17. "Diaphragm" side of stator. Zoom in and you can see the structure of net (copper??). Stator with plastic ring. Outer diameter 94mm and inner 84mm. Thickness of diaphragm ring is 0,95mm on my digital caliper, so I would say spacer thickness 0,5mm. To me spacer material looks like aluminium.

  20. Finished up a Soekris dam1021 build. This is the new rev7 board with a lot of improvements trickling down from the flagship dac2541. HiFi2000 case, FPE panels, JLSounds I2SoverUSB v.III input, LT3045-based power supplies, direct R-2R output intended for my headphone amp, and buffered output for my powered desk speakers. My aesthetic stylings and DIY skills haven't advanced even the tiniest bit since 2010, but I like the brutal elegance and minimalist functionality. Most importantly, it sounds really nice.

  21. I used to think that. Then I built a C-Note set. ? I am aware of no reliable measurements of the later revisions of 007A, but I started with @Tyll Hertsens's measurements of the 007Mk2 from back in the day, adjusted by ear where I think they diverge, and then used AutoEq to find a 5-band PEQ adjustment suitable for the ADI-2. Then I toned it way down, because the Harman target and oratory1990's adjustments can be excessive. FWIW, here's the 007A equalization set I use now: band 1: shelf filter, +2.5dB, 75Hz, Q 1.0 band 2: peak, +2.5dB, 100Hz, Q 1.0 band 3: peak, +0dB, 1.0kHz, Q 1.0 band 4: peak, +2.5dB, 2.5kHz, Q 1.5 band 5: shelf, +0dB, 10.0kHz, Q 1.0 Fairly subtle, but IMO a significant improvement.

  22. this is the first, and definitely not the last r2r discrete compensated dac https://kitsunehifi.com/product-category/audio-gear/dac/ i'm sure others will be duplicating these ideas soon, market is about to make a major change again absolutely insane (as in waste of money) to spend more than $2500 on a moving target.
