  1. Sooooo.... yeah. Liked the season, but didn't love it. It felt like they just had way too much going on for only being 8 episodes.
  2. I have an irrational love of software updates. For some reason I just love running them. Yesterday was a good day. I got to update four things I use a ton: My Kindle with an update that added a new font and a new typesetting engine. The Plex iOS app. The new one is a HUGE improvement. The Oppo 105 which added streaming from Tidal and some bug fixes. The Oppo iOS remote app I use to run the Oppo.Like I said. A happy day.
  3. So I never thought anything on the Disney channel would ever be for me, but on the recommendation of a friend I've been giving Star Wars: Rebels a shot. Wow, Rebels is actually pretty darn good! Someone had told me that Rebels is a better Star Wars experience than the 3 prequel movies. I think they may be right.
  4. Dear lord those are some expensive looking bottles. -- Also, paging Brent to the courtesy telephone please: http://www.seriouseats.com/2015/08/the-food-lab-super-flaky-buttermilk-biscuits-excerpt.html
  5. Original owner offered to take it back. If it doesn't sound better after tonight then that is the plan. EDIT: I tried all three inputs (USB, Coax, Toslink) and none of them sound good. I'm 90% sure this Yggy isn't working right. The treble is both hard and distant and the bass is just fat and loose. The Yggy I heard at the SF Bay Area meet didn't sound anything like this one. It is going back to the original owner and I've gone ahead and re-ordered from Schiit. I'm now in the back of the line, but oh well. Better to have one that works. I am going to go back and delete my earlier impressions as I don't think they accurately reflect what a properly functioning Yggy should sound like.
  6. I did some more listening last night, this time through the coax input and I think something may be wrong with this particular Yggy. I A/B'ed it with the Oppo and something just sounds off. I am going to contact Schiit and see about sending it in for them to take a look at.
  7. Excellent point, SG.
  8. I think often long term listening is as much about training you brain to a new normal as anything.
  9. EDIT: I am 90% sure the Yggy DAC I had at the time was not functioning properly, so I've struck my prior impressions. Hmmm.... So first impression is positive, but a bit of a mixed bag. The Yggy certainly sounds different than the Oppo, but I can't say it blew me away in quite the same way as it has others. Both the Yggy and the Oppo seem like competent DACs with different flavors. The main impression after my first night of listening was that the Yggy seems to be fatter down low and thinner (more natural?) up top than the Oppo, but that I'm not sure those differences play to the strengths of the 009s. There has been a ton of fuss about leaving the Yggy on continuously, so I figure a two week-ish audition is in order before I make a decision on whether to keep it. I'll leave her on the entire time and see if the sound changes, though I am extremely skeptical. I wish I had had a "WOW!" moment like so many others have seemed to. Is it possible this particular Yggy is a lemon? Or maybe all DACs really do sound similar. -- Other random notes: The Oppo works great as a network transport to feed PCM to the Yggy from my network shared drive, even if it is extreme overkill in that role. I didn't have a spare coax cable so I have the Oppo and Yggy connected via toslink. The only files that I haven't been able to play are 24/192 Flacs. Whether its the Oppo, Yggy or the toslink cable that is causing the issue, 24/192 files will not play unless I convert the Oppo converts them down to 24/96. I'll swing by worst-buy on my way home and grab a coax cable to see whether the toslink is at fault. I can confirm that the Oppo WILL NOT stream any audio from physical SACDs, even when it is set to convert DSD to PCM. The Oppo will however convert and play DSD files saved on my network drive. -- That is it for now. More impressions to come in a week or so.
  10. A used Yggy just went on sale locally and I'm snagging it tonight!
  11. What the hell is the point of popping the hood if you don't remove the plastic engine cover?
  12. I think it'd be hard to find anyone on this site that disagrees with the idea that police accountability in all matters is paramount.
  13. $54 a click for "insurance?" Holy guacamole. So that is where those high premiums go.
  14. If anyone is interested, the Millbrae Pancake House is a nice place to meet up for a group breakfast before the show doors open at 10AM.
  15. Isn't that a good thing? Welcome to using free software.
  16. Instructions for how to skip the "line" and upgrade right now.
  17. Just did a clean install to de-gunk my drives. Working great.
  18. I'm hoping at least one exhibitor has some super efficient speakers to show off. I'm considering picking up one of Craig's amps to run both dynamic headphones and speakers. It looks like some of his amps do 3W @ 8 ohms while the new Studio will double that up to 6W. At the very least I'd probably want a speaker with > 90dB/W/m, right?
  19. I plan on being there Saturday the 15th.
  20. Happy first birthday! -- My old gal, Sushi, turns 17 in October! She has been an indoor cat basically the entire second half of her life which seems to have kept her in good health. She is still as fussy, affectionate and spry as she was 5-10 years ago.
  21. Finished this piece of Schiit last night: Jason's book is pretty darn good. Better than it has any right to be. I really enjoyed reading it. Jason is a decent writer and he is a natural at sharing his experiences in and out of the audio world. I'd heartily recommend this one. 4/5. Can't say it has me interested in his sci-fi books though
  22. I've been running the preview for the last month and it is pretty solid.
  23. Thanks for sharing, Andy. I'm looking forward to mine showing up. I'm 2/3s of the way through Jason's book and I'm happy to support Schiit.
  24. I went ahead and put in a reminder in my calendar to call a year from now as soon as the "promotional" rates end for this very reason.
