So a friend of mine is trying to track down a painter. I tried doing an image search, but all I'm getting is a bunch of "oil painting with glare" type images, for obvious reasons. Anyone know how to get rid of the glare? Or perhaps they just know who the painter is.

Vinyl can be flattened again. But it would take a couple days for it to get to that point. Basements are a good place to store to avoid that. Then it would take even longer. There are plenty of after-market dust covers, and you should get one.

Can you get into the BIOS? This page seems to think it's "Cmd"/"Opt"/"O"/"F" all four at the same time. If it's like any other Intel BIOS, it'll be an ultra-simple menu -- no mouse, just arrow keys and Escape and Enter and not much more. Look for "Hardware" or "Memory" or something, then see if the slots are activated, iActuated, or whatever the Apple term for it is. (They may or may not have written their own firmware.) I'd be happy to talk you through it if want handheld, we just need to set up a time. Oh, hey, look, when I research the topic, I get you over here.

So the only points I was going to add or reinforce to what has already been said: With basements, you have to be careful that you don't block air flow, because humidity tends to accumulate in the basement, and you don't want to set up a mildewy environment. Which is actually contradictory to everything else you want to do, which is make as complete a sound seal between the two floors as possible. Doors are a big deal in studios, but pretty much every hole is going to be a source of sound leakage. So you kind of have to mitigate one against the other. When I was planning on building a small home studio in the basement of my former landlord's house, I was thinking of devising a system of letting the room breathe when I wasn't using it, and sealing it up when I was. The duct work is a good point -- it's just like a car, you have to cancel both sources of noise and rattle, but it's also a conduit for sound leakage.

On an unrelated note, I got a spam from a fake FBI agent -- don't they realize that impersonating an FBI agent is crossing a line?
