  1. No, it was recorded digitally, so I don't even know why they remastered it to HDCD -- sounds exactly the same to my (admittedly jaded) ears. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if you do not intend to decode the HDCD, stay away from it.
  2. I'm not a religious person, so I didn't appreciate the religious aspect of this, but I enjoyed the rest of it. I wonder how much of it is true (both the data presented as fact, and the suppositions that he honestly admitted were still theory and being looked into)?
  3. Mike Oldfield's Amarok has some of that. (Of course, that goes all the way back to Tubular Bells, and he actually lost the one sudden dynamic shift when he re-recorded it.) Also, less so, Jeff Beck's "Star Cycle" from There & Back (I blew the speakers in my dad's Mercury Cougar back in the day with this track, but I did have it cranked pretty high.)
  4. I was more curious how it "looked" on the iPad. Also would be curious what the "lighter" app looks like on the iPad -- does it look like a napalm, or just a really big lighter (cf. spoon/shovel debate).
  5. From memory -- so (a) don't hold me to it, and ( don't ask for which performance -- Also Sprach Zarathustra and 1812 Overture are both pretty dynamic.
  6. Has anyone tried the flashlight app on it yet?
  7. Jesus! And sweet! Fear, awe, and a bit o' thrill. Remind me never to get on your bad side.
  8. Castle -- grrr....
  9. Actually, it wasn't aggression -- they were locked in with him, and he didn't leave them enough food for two weeks, so they resorted to...uh...the last resort, so as not to starve. So the moral of the story is, if you're going to commit suicide, try to arrange for your corpse to be found quickly.
  10. It didn't even register that by "warmer clime" he was referring to Chicago.
  11. Mm-hm.
  12. Just to answer my own question, I'm thinking about getting a Pelican 1080, and a larger bag that will incorporate the 1080. The whole point is, I don't want a bag just for the Kindle, I have a few other things I carry around with me regularly (second pair of glasses, cell phone, drugs, iPod, etc.). Haven't confirmed that it's the best fit yet (lot of overage). But thought I'd throw it out there if anyone else likes that solution for their iPad -- does the iPad have the same problem as the Kindle DX (feels flimsy, is flimsy, will break too easily if thrown in a duffle/backpack/knapsack/murse/manbag/purse/briefcase/satchel/whatev)? Any reports of broken iPads coming in yet?
  13. It's too bad Zappos doesn't ship internationally.
  14. Unmodified, I believe the consensus is that the earlier model is preferred -- the II's have a bass hump that most non-rockers don't like.
  15. 'Season'?
  16. I listened to Porcupine Tree the entire way down to Richmond and back...you know, that sequence of "Anesthetize"/"Sentimental"/"Way Out Of Here" may be my favorite half hour of any of their records, excluding anything off Sky Moves Sideways or Stupid Dream.
  17. Wouldn't it (it==any PLL) phase-lock to the jitter-ridden signal?
  18. That sucks, dude, I'm just glad you survived the ordeal. Yeah, back when I was more involved with the music scene than I am now, I remember that all the people (it seemed especially in the DC area, but I'm beginning to think otherwise) who had to be sucked up to, to get free tickets and whatnot, were those sorts of people around whom drama always seemed to flow like whirlpools, which is one of the reasons I got out of it, and just signed up to paying for my tickets whenever I could, despite protests of my cheaper friends. You really need an ironclad constitution to deal with those people (also, a large bladder, I found -- I would never survive now). And that really sucks about Kiki. And though I know what you mean about not wanting to be the person to find the dead cat, you might still want to "be there" for her, since she was the one person who was helpful last night (or at least wanted to be/planned to be/whatever).
  19. You are awesome.
  20. Well, that's why I qualified it as done well. If you have very little jitter to begin with, then a PLL is really not that bad. It is possible to have low jitter in a cheap device, and there is an entire school of thought that most of the levels of jitter that we are talking about in audio fall well within that range. Yes. Yes it is. I'm not being sarcastic or sardonic or derisive or anything. If you can't hear jitter, then yes, you are much better off, and can sit back and call "bits is bits" and enjoy the music, at least as far as your source is concerned.
  21. They're closer to the ear, so they don't need to move that much air. (And don't anyone else try to argue with me about this, I've got one 4-letter word for y'all: JH13.) Dew et.
  22. Fuck. Yeezh. Jesus. I did laundry. Drove to Richmond and back. Did some research for work. No drama. Good day. Yes, I am also somewhat inebriated. Rainbows and puppies and fairy-farted pixie dust in mah world. EDIT: Oh, and can I be the first to say: tch, yah! I mean, I'm not saying it didn't happen exactly as described, but in this day of post-Michael Jackson scandal, does anyone doubt the appropriateness of this behavior? And that it would lead to even yet still more wildly inappropriate behavior? Yes, I turned my computer back on just to post this.
  23. So is it particularly ironic that I find myself saying, "Jesus!" as an expletive while watching a video of people trying to walk on water?
  24. I think we found Shelly's wife.
