    Deals

Thanks, I have been looking at buying one of these for a while. With that price, that was a no brainer. Now to find some good deals on 1 Terabyte drives ...
  2. Happy Birthday to the godfather of the K340 mafia. Hope you have a great one.
  3. and The first is not for me but the second is
  4. I didn't accept the offer, I'm leaving it to my son in my will I had also bought Dark Side of the Moon, Steely Dan's Aja and Gaucho and The Moody Blues' Days of Future Passed at the same time. Right now unfortunately, they are probably some of the best investments I own.
  5. They are expensive but the OOP MoFi and DCC disks have commanded some hefty prices from whoever was selling them. A few months ago someone offered me $250 for my MoFi copy of The Wall! Almost 10x what I paid for it from a going-out-of-business record store in Austin about 15 years ago.

    Nixon

Hmmm .... Why do I suddenly have flashes of Mel Gibson and Tina Turner?
  7. Well I spent a good bit of time listening to the Shanling PH3000 at work because I believe this review needs to be given an asterisk. I was surprised at the mention of a lot of tube noise. I brought in my recabled K701's since that is the only one of the phones used in the review that I have. Result: Absolutely no noise and no hiss detectable, even with the volume turned up to max (with no music playing obviously). This was also the result with my recabled Denon D2000 and Alessandro MSPro's. My guess is that the tubes may need to be reseated or there is a bad tube. It could also be that the Shanling has a crappy PSU. Since this is at work in a biology building with lots of compressors and motors on the circuit, I have everything plug into my BPT custom balanced power unit. I subsequently plugged everything into a cheap power strip which went directly into the wall. With that there was some detectable noise when I maxed the volume control. I could not detect any significant noise increase at my normal listening levels so I don't think the Shanlings PSU is likely contributing significantly to the hiss. I would suggest that a tube swap may be in order, perhaps by whoever has the Shanling now. Associated equipment was a Pop/Pulse USB/Spdif converter connected via AES/EBU to an Apogee Mini/DAC connected via XLR/RCA to the Shanling. All being fed FLAC files from my workstation.
  8. Happy birthday to a gentleman and a scholar:

    LS3/5a

Well I haven't heard one but there is a follow-up review of the Gini Systems LS3/5a in the December Stereophile by John Marks and John Atkinson. There are links and references to information on other incarnations of the LS3/5a's in John Marks Fifth Element column.
  10. Well then, Matt certainly has good taste in turntables
  11. Looks like another great Florida meet. I really need to retire so work does not constantly get in the way of making it to meets. Thanks for the pictures, you had some nice gear show up. Who owns the Denon TT? I love the older Denons.
  12. May your birthday be better than his music. Have a great one.
  13. Yep that's what our 60" is. The SXRD technology is really great and the picture is stunning when you get it calibrated. I'm not too worried about replacing it as that will (hopefully) be a few years down the line and video technology seems to be going at a pretty good clip now. Now for the obligatory "lasers" image:
  14. We have a 60" Sony rear projection Monitor in our family room. The viewing distance is about 12'. When we first got it the screen seemed huge as it replaced a 27" CRT. We now both agree that we could easily go bigger, especially when watching sports. Unless you really think you need the Plasmas black levels and (maybe) faster refresh rates I would go with the LCD's. The technology increases on LCD's has made the gap really small between LCD and plasma.
  15. Well I guess that makes up my mind on the matter. When is the next Florida meet?

    America...

Reading practice much comprehension? You truly are a moron. The it goes both ways was not an indictment of both sides (but I guess you were too lazy to look up the word anecdotal) but merely the reality that you can find individual incidents to bolster any side of any case. My point was that neither your example nor mine represented an overwhelming pattern or trend. Sorry Nate, but that is as nice as I can be when someone implies that I am "less than a good man". Especially when it is implied (i.e. have the balls to come right out and say what you mean) and when it is based upon their complete lack of reading comprehension. I guess eight years of not valuing education in this country has taken its toll.
  17. I'm glad it looks O.K. for you Ken. Luis please keep us updated and let us know if there is anything we can do besides the moral support.

    America...

Goes both ways. A local teacher here was put on academic leave pending an investigation of verbally abusing students that made positive comments about Obama or negative comments about McCain. Caused quite an uproar at the local school board meeting. Neverthesless, both are merely anecdotal.

    America...

That is a valid point. School aged children are capable of making up their own minds and forming a coherent thought. Republican vice-presidential candidates (and current POTUS) are not. Thanks for reminding me.
  20. We were in Miami for the annual wildlife conference at the downtown Hyatt. Between meeting committments and our son there wasn't really any time for anything else. Besides it seems as if you were jet-setting around yourself quite a bit the last few days. I always get annoyed when my grown-up life intrudes on my hobbies .
