I know this is one of those questions, but I guess I'm looking for a cheap and cheerful USB DAC/amp that will leave some room to grow with harder-to-drive headphones. Thinking Total Bithead budget -- is there a better way to go (including used and DIY) for that kind of scratch? All suggestions welcome. Except "buy him a Pico." We're not that kind of friends.

Nate, I have friends in consumer finance and used to follow the industry in my previous job. And you're right, it's a cesspool. Of interest, the big issuers are thinking of swinging the pendulum all the way back now that the party's over. We'll likely soon see them starting to unilaterally close the accounts of customers under a certain credit score threshold in the name of cleaning up their loan portfolios. This will be a very nasty surprise for lots of people who have been living on credit, or counting on it as their cushion to get through the coming tough period, and an absolute kick in the nuts for consumer spending and the broader economy. So if you think CC companies are unpopular now, just wait a while!

Right now I use the HD600s pretty much all the time in preference to the HD650s. I'm going to hold on to both until I get the GS-1 and see how they each like that. This probably opens me up for an ass-kicking, but I also feel the Enigma Apex cable makes a big difference with the 600s, particularly in terms of bass reproduction. Sort of takes them in the direction of the 650s, while retaining the greater urgency/immediacy the 600s have stock. Forgive my inadequate powers of description, please.
