  1. The range he is looking at is 1500 - 2800, and I am sure he could go a little higher if it is worthwhile. The problem is he wants the to be available from the same dealer as the Naim, Innovative Audio Video on 58th.
  2. OK, a new question for the group regarding speakers for this receommended system. Decent sized room, but not huge. Local dealer really likes the Dynaudio Excites or the Triangle Comete (for bookshelf use especially because Comete is front ported). The NYC dealer is recommending Dynaudio Focus 140, Dynaudio Contour S1.4, B&W CM5, B&W 805S, and Linn Majik 109. I like the Cometes, the B&W 805S. I don't know the Dynaudio or Linn options at all, and I don't like the CM5 so I am saying no go on that one at least. Anybody have experience with any of these speakers? He is buying the Naim Uniti and Naim phono stage. Thanks.
  3. I was sitting here listening to the P1u when you posted the caps/toenails comment, and noticed this post about quietness. The P1 is a silent, silent amp, and I had the same reaction as you. I have both of them hooked up right now to the same balanced source and nothing in the RCAs. The P1u has the plastic caps, but otherwise they are set up the same. I paused the music and listened on both amps with the HD800s. At 10:00 on the volume, neither was making any noise--no hiss, or what I call "presence" when you can just hear enough to know it is on. I then cranked the volume all the way on the P1u and there is only the slightest hiss/presence audible. It is there, but it is very, very faint. Also, the "sound" does not ever appear until 4:00, which is almost fully open (5:00 is the end of the dial). I then did the same on the P1 and it was FOUR TIMES LOUDER! Well, I'm kidding, but it is noticeably louder even though it is still very quiet compared to many amps. It also kicked in around 3:30/4:00 on the dial. Interesting. I also switched the input selector to coax and there was NO noise at any volume level on either amp. Pretty impressive. I don't know where to get the plastic caps for RCA and/or XLR. Elephas gave me some metal RCA plugs, and I know Cardas makes that type.
  4. That BAT VK-5i on Agon looks pretty damn sweet and is available. And I too see only one balanced output on the 3 series.
  5. You only have a few minutes to edit that so think long and hard how it would go over with the "little woman." Hiring a bodyguard for your wife is very weird. How often will he be needed?
  6. Woods -- At Rear House Woods -- Songs of Shame
  7. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan -- Sunday at Devil Dirt
  8. I can't tell you how many times that album was played in my dorm during sophomore year (when it was released). Holy shit was I sick of the "Scorps!" for a long time thereafter.
  9. Nouvelle Vague -- 3 Fun with covers!
  10. Same. Well, when I had them.
  11. Yes, that is the beginning of it.
  12. Dinny, I too hope you get a good and comfortable fit this time. I think your measured posts on these wonder-cans will blossom into the proper joy and adoration after the re-fit! Without getting into the fray, I was going to say that they looked right side up from the pic. Anyway, they are very cool looking, even if not quite as fierce as the model, and they will sound great no matter what. I suggest you try them right out of the ULN-8 headphone jack and you will be very pleased. Assuming, of course, you are up to speed and have the setup working.

  16. I guess my First Edition hardback of Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction will be worth a little more now. [/crass self-interested take on event]
  17. Scorpions -- Blackout
  18. This evening Ric, Shelly, and I wished JP a fond farewell from the Left Coast by taking him out to the Trappist and Luka's Taproom in Oaktown. It was a sad occasion from my perspective, but fun to send him out in some amount of style. I'm gonna miss ya, buddy, but it was fun having you around. Is Grawk going to have to be New New Mike? Cheers.
  19. If only the fetus was holding a tablet in the 2010 poster. Now that would be something.
  20. Wut? Did you foresake the ULN-2?
  21. ^You Apple apologist, you!
  22. Grandioso seems like a really stupid name for headphones. Merriam agrees: Main Entry: gran
