November 26, 201312 yr I used to play all the time with family members. I would not call myself great by any means, but it's a great game when you are equally matched.
November 26, 201312 yr I love chess, though I have not played in many years. When I did play, I was...adequate. I would actually like to say I'm very good, because I was taught by some greats (my father -- classic two Russians getting together to socialize, talk politics, and play chess), and though I never beat him, I have beaten most every other non-Russian opponent at least once.
November 26, 201312 yr I only heard of Bujalski for the first time the other night -- was trying to explain mumblecore to my sister, which I am only familiar with, myself, theoretically (hadn't actually seen any mumblecore films, according to wikipedia). ( a ) Are you familiar with mumblecore? ( b ) Would you recommend it to me? ( c ) Is this mumblecore?
November 26, 201312 yr He invented the genre. He hates the term. I really dig his stuff. Suspect you would too (start with whatever is convenient, but I'd recommend Mutual Appreciation). This seems more ambitious, but close enough. He's more important than the genre in my book. EDIT: Just watched 10 minutes of Computer Chess. Looks fantastic. November 26, 201312 yr Love playing chess. Bought the movie "Searching for Bobby Fischer" and have subjected all family members to it. Fun to learn about building up attacks on squares to control real estate (rather than just trying to win pieces) and increasing the dynamic value of pieces in relation to the opponent. The subtle things build up and then later positions can seem "beautiful".
November 26, 201312 yr I used to play a lot when I was a kid. i was pretty good. Belonged to a few chess clubs. I actually still have my old electronic chess game that I begged for for Christmas when I was 10 or 11 years old. Still works too. I beat it on Level 7 once.
November 27, 201312 yr I know how the pieces move, but that's where my knowledge ends. I never got good at doing coordinated attacks. However, besides playing the game itself, I've always just liked the look of a chessboard as a display piece. So many different styles out there too. I have one made of stone pieces brought to me by a friend who visited Peru. Very unique set. Edited November 27, 201312 yr by screaming oranges
November 27, 201312 yr I used to play a lot when I was in my 20s,not much after that.I still have a large wooden chess set I bought in mexico in the 70s for $15.
November 27, 201312 yr Here is my favorite game that I've played. That was just over 10 years ago, haven't improved since.
November 27, 201312 yr Nice game! Played in tournaments in the 80's (US Open a couple of times). I used to play all over California. I haven't played anything but a few 5 minute games here and there since. I came across a couple of boxes of my old chess books the other day while I was deciding what books I really wanted to save. Fisher's 50 Favorite Games made the cut. Brought back some memories of when I all my friends were SF Bay Area chess guys. Those were some very crazy days!
November 28, 201312 yr Greatly prefer Japanese chess to its western cousin. Played on a few websites for a while as well. Just seems more exciting and less bookish to me.Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
December 1, 201312 yr Author Is anyone interested in playing a few games online? I just discovered that I have an account at chess.com and am active on itsyourturn.com My name is nikongod on both sites.
December 2, 201312 yr Not me. I discovered in college what a mediocre play I was. During the 5 hour trip up to Mammoth for skiing, I would play with a friend who was an Expert (one rank below Master, I believe). To make things "fair", he wasn't allowed to look at the board. I never won a game.
January 29, 201412 yr Author I recently discovered this site: http://bestchessmenever.com/ His blog is pretty fun. This board is SO COOL!
January 29, 201412 yr I am trying to get back to it. Ari I am going to try to find you. These days I use mainly apps on the phone.
January 29, 201412 yr Author The chess.com app for Android is not too bad. Dunno how it works on the iPhone, but I imagine pretty well. I just found mate in 4 in a game. Very proud. My next trick will be not trading my queen for a night in every 8'th game. Last time it was a night and a rook...
January 29, 201412 yr Nothing wrong with sacrificing your queen, he was probably getting antsy anyway. That board is brilliant. If he put alternating poles one way on the left edge and the other way on the right, he could use the magnets to help him stack them as well.
