Some more hesitant consumers of casu marzu (myself included) prefer to place the cheese in a sealed bag prior to eating it. The CO2 builds up quickly, suffocating the larvae, and they jump and hit the sides of the bag before dying. It's lot holding a bag of microwave popcorn while it's in the microwave.

If they're freshly dead, the cheese isn't toxic. Bad news? Not so delicious.
