dusty/todd/other hardware people - assuming i do raid 5, for purely storage purposes (speed has absolutely no bearing on what i am trying to do...the output will be bottlenecked by usb anyways) would i be better off with a desktop mobo or a server mobo. part of me wants to just build the simplest desktop possible in a big ass chassis and get raid cards which would increase the price of the total project by quite a bit.

1. regular desktop mobo with craploads of sata ports.

2. server mobo with craploads of sata ports.

3. el cheapo rig with some raid controller.

thoughts?

As you're doing simple file storage, I would recommend #3. If you go with a server mobo you'll get lots of features you don't need and also you probably won't get craploads of sata ports on board.

Have you thought about using a Windows Home Server setup? you can set it to automatically mirror specific shares, so there's always a second copy of your data on a separate drive.

in the "piracy circles" there are seeders (people who host/share what they download) and then there are leechers (they just download and dont share with their peers). ive been seeding every since i got involved with the scene. it obviously will not make it ok with the people who have a problem with it but thats my side of the story. either way i will not change the minds of people whose moral compasses point due north (which is fine by me) so this is all i will say on this matter.
You can't possibly watch all that porn and listen to all those bootlegs in this lifetime, so your primary purpose is to serve it to others. You really that benevolent?

I'm pretty sure using bittorrent shortens the lifespan of your hdds especially if everything on there is being seeded...

You may wish to try HDD Regenerator I had a problem quite similar to yours. Other recovery softwares just were able to recover a few files, or found nothing wrong. I decided to try the demo, it scans and recovers 1 defective sector each time, so recovering a whole HDD with the demo may take eons. Despite that, the demo showed me the potential of the software, then decided to register. The program managed to recover about 90% of what I had lost, which is a great result IMO.

Someone who is not willing to pay for anything is not willing to pay for anything.

Sad, but true.

Making copies of copyrighted material with an intent to mass distribute said material leaves a sour taste in my mouth. It's one thing to share copyrighted material for personal use; beyond fair use, mass distributing for the principal purpose of distributing to the general public is not kosher.

I think losing the 3 drives was the best thing that could have happened to you, crappyjones123.

you guys have this community. ive been part of the scene for almost 7 years now. that is my community. i may not be able to contribute as much to headcase but i do contribute a lot to the scene. it is not a matter of benevolence. it is just something people do. take that however you like.

to those who feel justice was served - if you have done absolutely nothing unsavory or morally reprehensible, however insignificant, in your life, i accept your criticism and admire you for leading the life of a saint and doing no wrong EVER.

STFU Crappy, you're sounding like a complete jackass. Most of us here, at some point or another have participated in the illegal sharing of material. But there's a big effing difference between sharing an album with someone who will more than likely go purchase said album if they like it and seeding 20 fracking terrabytes of data, basically none of which you own.

to those who feel justice was served...<snip>

I would fall into that camp. :chair::basement:
