End of an era

Haven't listened to them in years, but was my first real concert and first band to see twice. Will be curious what Peter Buck does next.

it was my Dad who got me into REM. I remember listening to "Reckoning" esp. "Pretty Persuasion" and thinking, no one else sounds like this.

I was just looking up song lyrics by them not a day ago. Glad that I was able to see them in concert when I got the chance.

I'm actually happy to see a great band call it quits before they become stale. IMO the Stones should have done so a few decades back. I'd hate to think of R.E.M. as anything but great.

I agree with you, Steve, but it is still a bit sad to see a band that was key to your youth call it quits. As a buddy of mine said when I emailed him, getting old sucks.

Everyone but me probably knew this years ago, but only found out a week back Cobain listened to Automatic for the People before pulling the trigger.

They pretty much lost me with "Reveal" and I haven't bought any of their newer albums, though I always went to their concerts when they came by my area. R.E.M. was the first band I really got into, I still have a couple of their albums in the original LP release, "Reckoning" on vinyl absolutely kills the CD version. It's been a long trip with a ton of amazing & influencial music along the way, I think they made the right choice. It was time.

It's always sad to lose a piece of your youth. But IMO they went out in style.

And as a buddy of mine said, "it's better than the alternative".

R.E.M. was one of the top bands of the 80's for me, and possibly one of the top 100 bands of all time. Have fun in your next endeavors guys!

Have to say, I wasn't the biggest fan of their last several albums. I respected the hell out of them, but the first two will always be my faves. Maybe because of the time they were done, and my age and place in life.....

Still, an great indelible mark on music history!

Damn. One of my favourite bands in the past too. A relative of mine knows the band (from when she was living in Athens), so I might have to see if she has heard the news.

So were they friends? Still can't tell.
